Rethinking Birth Control & Abortion

prolife

by CaluluA few days ago our Spiritual Abuse Survivor Blogs Network member Libby Anne of Love, Joy, Feminism wrote a compelling post called 'How I Lost Faith in the "Pro Life" Movement'. She laid out how she'd gone from a staunch member of the Pro Life movement to a Progressive Pro Choice position over the years. The evidence she presents shows that increased access to birth control reduces the abortion rates. Banning abortion doesn't do any good towards reducing the number of abortions either.I can see that. In my Quiverfull years I was a crisis phone line volunteer for a pro life clinic.  I saw statistics that indicated that abortion numbers actually fell during the years it's been … [Read more...]

The Parenting Project – Introduction

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA

by CaluluA while back Libby Anne from Love, Joy Feminism had a inspired idea to run a series on her blog called Raised Quiverfull. The way it worked if you're not familiar with it was that she posted a list of questions asking readers to write in and share what life was like being raised in a Quiverfull Patriarchy Fundamentalist home. An impressive array of folks responded to her multi part questionnaire and it made for some of the most revealing and interesting reading on the subject of Quiverfull. Then Sierra came up with the theme of The Sexuality Project on her blog the phoenix and olive branch. Open to anyone that wished to participate that had been involved with the world of … [Read more...]

Fear-Based Parenting

by Kristen Rosser aka KRWordgazerLatebloomer at Past Tense Present Progressive is blogging about Reb Bradley's book Child Training Tips.  Calulu at Roadkill on the Information Superhighway is blogging about Michael and Debbi Pearl's To Train Up a Child.  I'd like to chime in today with some thoughts about the method of child rearing which the two books share: they call it "Biblical parenting" or "Bible-based child training," but it bears no resemblance to the way Jesus spoke of or treated children.  Instead, it takes a few proof texts (mostly from Proverbs) and builds an entire harsh, repressive and unjust regime out of them. This is not something I can remain silent about. It goes … [Read more...]

Why I Find Perverse Pleasure in the Sexual Peccadilloes of Evangelical Leaders

by Bruce GerencserI am quite indifferent to the sexual peccadillos of others. What consenting adults do sexually is none of my business. I think so-called sexual “sins” like adultery and fornication find their foundation in the Bible and I reject the Bible as a moral or ethical standard. We are sexual creatures. Desiring to have sex is as much a part of who we are as eating and drinking. Sexual activity, regardless of orientation, is normal and it not surprising when sexual activity overflows the banks of the Christian moral river. It doesn’t surprise me that Dinesh D’Souza had sex with a woman other than his wife. Recent reports say that not only was D’Souza committing what his Chr … [Read more...]

Duggar Family Singing on the Campaign Trail of Todd Akin

Matthew 12:35 "Out of the abundance of the heart the mouth speaks" by Calulu  Today some of the more popular media outlets like Buzzfeed, finally picked up on the story that the holier than holy Jim Bob & Michelle Duggar family had started stumping for Todd Akin. They've been with Akin and others trying to drum up votes since early this week. I wonder how long it will take mainstream media to realize that the Duggars are part of the campaign rally for a man almost universally reviled for his repugnant remarks on rape? It's a question that bears asking considering by doing so the Duggars are stamping their approval on the very thing that makes everyone else hate Todd Akin. I wonder … [Read more...]

Crime and Punishment

spare_the_rod4

by MariI've been procrastinating about telling this part of the story. In the previous chapter of the story, I talked about having nightmares about death. That story was the whitewashed version. I’m not saying that what was written isn’t true. It is. But for me, the experience was a lot worse than it probably sounded in the previous chapter. When I was in college several years ago, I wrote several autobiographical stories, and most of what I posted in the previous chapter was one of the stories I wrote. At that time, I wasn’t in a place where I could expose what really happened.I’m not sure if I’m currently in a place to talk about it either. But I’m going to try. Those years … [Read more...]

Jack Schaap: Isolated Incident or the One That Got Caught?

schaap

by CaluluI haven't updated NLQ much with the latest on Jack Schaap and his ongoing legal confloption. Yesterday I was perusing the news on Jack Schaap, the former pastor of the First Baptist Church of Hammond, Indiana to see what had gone down on his plea arraignment on September 27, 2012. Schaap not only plead guilty as he'd agreed to in his plea deal; he also claimed that he didn't realize he was breaking any laws. Ignorance of the law is never a good defense in court. His sentencing will take place on January 15, 2013. It will be interesting to see what the judge feels is appropriate in this case even if it's likely he'll get only the ten years. The speed the feds has shown from … [Read more...]

Charlie Fuqua says Death Penalty an Option for Rebellious Children

by Bruce GerencserCharlie Fuqua, Republican candidate for the Arkansas House of Representatives, supports the death penalty for rebellious children.Fuqua wrote: The maintenance of civil order in society rests on the foundation of family discipline. Therefore, a child who disrespects his parents must be permanently removed from society in a way that gives an example to all other children of the importance of respect for parents. The death penalty for rebellious children is not something to be taken lightly. The guidelines for administering the death penalty to rebellious children are given in Deut 21:18-21:If a man have a stubborn and rebellious son, which will not obey the voice … [Read more...]
