Babies, Duggars and Me

Permissiontolivemelissa

by Melissa cross posted from her blog Permission To Live originally posted November 12, 2011The command to be fruitful and multiply was mentioned frequently in our marriage ceremony and reception. But it didn’t really need to be, we both knew what we believed. One of the questions we had discussed during our courtship was our commitment to never use birth control. … [Read more...]

News: Justin Harris Had Three Adopted Daughters

news

This weekend more detail has emerged in the adopted daughters rehoming into the family of a sexual predator done by Arkansas representative (and rumored Duggar friend) Justin Harris. There were three daughters, one of whom was sent back to DHS instead of adopted. Turns out the other two were rehomed mere months after the adoption was finalized. This is just starting to look worse and worse, like the typical Evangelical rescue adopter that likely should never be adopting in the first place. … [Read more...]

On Disguising Logical Fallacies in ‘Feminist’ Arguments

Image from Samantha Field - Defeating The Dragons

by Samantha Field cross posted from her blog Defeating The Dragons While the following may not be a completely universal experience, in my experience it tends to be a common one: when a rape victim starts talking about their experience (especially on the internet), inevitably someone somewhere is going to say something along the lines of “you need to take responsibility for your own choices that led to this.” And then they are shocked– shocked, I say– when someone responds with “stop victim blaming us.” After all, how could they be victim blaming? Didn’t you just hear them argue for agency and autonomy? They are the real feminist in this conversation because real feminists “acknowledge that … [Read more...]

Quoting Quiverfull: Demons and Children?

quotingquiverfull

by Johnathan Parnell from John Piper's Desiring God blog - Parenting Means Wrestling DemonsEditor's note: There's just so much to dislike in Mr. Parnell's article on parenting and the demonic that it's hard to pick only one awful quote. The main message running through the piece seems to be that the devil is there to trip you up in parenting your children no matter what parenting style you pick and that demons hate children. Love your children, but don't love them too much seems to be the core message. … [Read more...]

News: Justin Harris Claiming Victim Status In Rehoming Daughters With Rapist

news

From Raw Story - Arkansas Republican Dodges Blame For Giving Adopted Daughters to Rapist: "I'm The Victim Here'The story by the Harris family that they had no options but to rehome their adopted daughters with someone else is ridiculous. Many times cases of reactive attachment disorder in adopted children can be helped with therapy and medication. Many times in most states the local CPS or DHS has referrals, contacts and sometimes funding for the treatment of the myriad of disorders some adopted children may have. It is not a black and white or an either or situation. Even when nothing works and the family decides that they must disrupt the adoption for the good of the family many times … [Read more...]

News: CPAC and the Enforcement of Traditional Roles Only for Women

news

Not sure if everyone here has been following the last few days in the news and the coverage of the conservative Christian organization CPAC currently holding meetings in the Washington, DC area. Most of what's been reported in the media is a blender of Evangelical crazy, completely devoid of any common sense or reality. Example: "Duck Dynasty" star Phil Robertson gave a paranoid rambling speech that claimed 'STDs are the revenge of the hippies' and that 'you should only have sex for 30 seconds or less'. Seriously, I'm not making this up - Talking Points Memo - Duck Dynasty Star Rambles About STDs and Nazis in CPAC Speech … [Read more...]

Quoting Quiverfull: Alecia Pennington Having No Official ID Is ‘True Freedom’?

quotingquiverfull

by David at Nooganomics.com - Homeschooling grad finds liberty stifling; she's 19, says she can't get legal IDEditor's note: This man seems to think that being completely unidentifiable in a legal sense is something to be valued? Original posting has lots of praise for the Pennington parents and digs at the federal government and society in general. Think this guy is hiding in a spider hole near Chattanooga, Tennessee stockpiling weapons and dehydrated foodstuffs? Another self-appointed patriarch trying to tell a girl how to live. How can anyone possibly believe that a lack of a legal birth certificate is an advantage? … [Read more...]

Jessa Duggar Says Liberal Christians Going To Hell!

Whatheheck

by Suzanne TitkemeyerAt least that's what Raw Story claims in their story on Jessa Duggar Seewald's recent Facebook posting - Duggar Daughter Casts Judgement Against Liberal ChristiansWhile I hate giving anyone or anything Duggar-related free publicity by posting their antics here this needs to be examined. What exactly is she attempting to accomplish here? … [Read more...]

Ken Cuccinelli, HSLDA, and Identification Abuse

by R.L. Stollar, community coordinator for Homeschoolers Anonymous. Cross posted from Homeschoolers Anonymous Former Virginia Attorney General Ken Cuccinelli is a homeschooling father and long-time political favorite of homeschooling leaders. He has keynoted for Generation Joshua, HSLDA’s youth mobilization organization. And to return the favor, 200 Generation Joshua participants — funded by HSLDA’s political action committee — launched “an early deployment to work with the Cuccinelli campaign [for the Virginia Governorship]” in 2013. This deployment was codenamed “Operation: Shock and Awe” and paired with a Mission Impossible-themed video: … [Read more...]

Quoting Quiverfull: What To Say To Depressed Women?

quotingquiverfull

by Jessica from Smartter Each Day as cross posted at The Humbled Housewife - To the Mom Who Feels DepressedEditor's note: While this is the rare Christian woman urging others to get medical treatment for depression and that's good, having someone else tell you how 'selfish' you are being because you are depressed is really discouraging. I'm glad it jolted the original author into seeking help, but in the world of Quiverfull Evangelical Fundamentalism it's a message that is repeated again and again, 'You have no reason to be depressed because you are blessed, so suck it up and be joyful'. It's a toxic message that's led to tragedies, such as mothers in the movement who have killed their … [Read more...]
