Tea Party Family Values and the World's Greatest Freak Show

On fundamentalist counterculture & juvenile black market adoption fantasies ... by Vyckie Garrison @ No Longer Quivering Do you remember when it first dawned on you that your relatives are all a bunch of crackpots and weirdos?  Seems like I was around 8 or 9 — my mother worked all night in the casinos and slept most of the day, leaving me alone to protect my naïve older sister from the depraved advances of Mom's alcoholic boyfriends and worry about my big brother's drug addiction. I couldn't count on my grandparents to help — they were too preoccupied with their own divorce, dating, and remarriage dramas. "Holy sugar," I thought to myself, "these people are seriously messed … [Read more...]

Magic Menstrual Mummies

A boy discovers that there are right and wrong kinds of blood. by Frank Schaeffer I’d never heard of pheromones when I was ten. All I knew was that each month the large wicker basket in the bathroom on the middle floor of our chalet filled with softball sized, tightly-wound wads of toilet paper. These tissue bundles were evidence that—in biblical terms—the time of Our Girls’ Monthly Uncleanness was once again upon them. Let me explain why I’ve capitalized those words. My late father, Francis Schaeffer, was a key founder of the Religious Right. My mother, Edith, was herself a spiritual leader—not merely the power behind her man, though she was also that. My parents raised me … [Read more...]

To Train Up A Child: Michael Pearl's Dangerous Child Training Advice and Renal Failure

Pearl Method Problems and Kidney Disease Detection: How Many More Zariahs Will Go Undiagnosed, Untreated, or Unreported? The autopsy report of Lydia Schatz indicated that she died from a condition called rhabdomyolosis, the rapid release of excessive amounts of broken muscle fragments into the bloodstream. Because the body cannot process such large amounts of these fragments, they end up lodging in the kidney, blocking the fine network of microscopic tubules that filter dissolved waste products from the blood and turn it urine. When medical treatments fail to open up these blockages within the kidney created by the muscle fibers fragments, the tiny tubules die and do not regenerate. Due to … [Read more...]

Dan Webster's Religious “Family Values” – Disguised Misogyny: Former devotee speaks out

For Immediate Release: October 5, 2010.  For more information, contact Vyckie Garrison. Women are conditioned to be submissive to their husbands, discouraged from using birth control, and prohibited from working outside the home. Gothard-style worldview and lifestyle overburdens women, enslaves the daughters and destroys families. Vyckie Garrison was involved with Webster ally, Bill Gothard's teachings for 14 years; after following the fundamentalist teachings of the 'Quiverfull' movement, Garrison was subjected to mental abuse and told to ignore medical advice not to have more children because her job as a woman was to obey God by submitting to her husband - an act that allegedly … [Read more...]

Listen to Vyckie Garrison on The Story with Dick Gordon

The reality TV couple, the Duggars, stars of "19 Kids and Counting," just brought home their 19th child this summer. Allowing God to decide how many kids to have, the Duggars are like many conservative Christians who subscribe to the cross-denominational, patriarchal ideals of the Quiverfull movement. Vyckie Garrison knows about that life because she lived it. The divorced mother of seven left the movement and her husband two years ago. Vyckie says for her, the life of submission she was leading was life-threatening and mentally abusive. She has full custody of her kids and has started a blog, No Longer Quivering, as a source of support for women escaping and recovering from what Vyckie … [Read more...]

Jill, Jessa and Jinger Duggar: "Experiencing freedom teenagers rarely taste."

by Vyckie Charlie Richards ~ the creator of the Christian video series, "Life at the Pond" ~ recently shared on his blog about his experience of working with the Duggar kids ~ particularly the three oldest girls, Jill, Jessa & Jinger, whom he describes as, " sharp, fun and informed." They know what’s going on out there.  But it isn’t at all a part of their every day life. And, to the shock and dismay of so many, they’re okay with that. While, admittedly, I admire the Duggars for much of what they do, I didn’t expect what I saw in these three girls.  The world has yet to beat them into submission.  They don’t watch the Disney Channel, so they’ve yet to learn that … [Read more...]

Debt-Free Duggars ~ Pt. 2: Quiverfull Royalty vs. Quivering Reality

Debt-Free Duggars ~ Pt. 1: How Quiverfull Couples Support All Those Kids! ... the rest of the story ... by Hopewell Viewers of the earliest Duggar TLC Specials [14 Children and Pregnant Again, 16 Kids and Moving In, etc] know that the Duggars have not always lived in a 7,000 square foot debt-free dream house. In fact, like many of today’s Quiverfull families, they lived very humbly for many years saving for that dream home. A 900 square foot home behind a used car lot on a busy highway is not an average Mother of 5 little children’s dream home! Yet Michelle put up with these cramped quarters—often hiding out in the bedroom with all the kids while Jim-Bob closed a car sale. Like … [Read more...]
