When Evangelicalism Makes Things Easy For Sexual Offenders – and Hard for Their Victims

baby washing her face

by Libby Anne cross posted from her blog Love, Joy Feminism Evangelical teachings on repentance and forgiveness create a tremendous problem when it comes to rape or other forms of abuse. If you commit a sin and repent of it, God forgives you. I remember hearing Psalm 103:12 quoted constantly: “As far as the east is from the west, so far has he removed our transgressions from us.” Of course, this was always said in a positive way—isn’t it awesome that God forgives us no matter what? But it doesn’t must mean God forgives us. It also means God forgives rapists, child molesters, and so on—fully and completely. I was taught that bringing up sins that someone had already … [Read more...]

Not Quoting Quiverfull: Protecting Sons?

Boy in Front of Girl

Blogger Bunker Down has written an excellent rant about modesty - How the modesty police are hurting my son If you want your daughter (and hopefully son) to dress modestly because you want them to value their intrinsic self over their outer self?  Fabulous.  If you want your daughter (and hopefully son) to dress modestly to create healthy attitudes toward sexuality?  Great.  If you want your daughter (and hopefully son) to dress modestly to glorify the Creator of all things?  Boo-ya.  If you want your daughter (and hopefully son) to dress modestly because it is a long standing tradition of your church/synagogue/people/culture/or group?  Awesome possum. … [Read more...]

The Female Body, a Source of Contamination

female_body

by Libby Anne cross posted from her blog Love, Joy, Feminism I recently came upon a blog post titled “How the Modesty Police Are Hurting My Son,” in which blogger Ami writes about trying to teach her son that he is responsible for his own actions even as those around her tell him that girls are responsible for covering up so as to “protect” him. As I looked through the mostly positive comments on her post, I was struck by this one: I think it’s great that you teach your child all these things—and I think it’s great that parents teach their children modesty. And sometimes it is to protect boys—they can’t un-see a girl’s body once it’s been seen barely clad. Many … [Read more...]

Why? From Vicativ -"Duck Dynasty" Bible Joins Long Tradition of Stupid Theme Biblis The Robertson clan continues to expand their $400 million empire of duck calls, sweet tea glasses, and other Duck Dynasty-themed goods, so it’s only natural that they’ve added the word of God to the mix. Quoting Quiverfull: Definition of Rape?

drunksex

by Matt Walsh of The Matt Walsh Blog -  We Can't End 'Rape Culture' if We Don't End Hook Up Culture An article on the Huffington Post takes it a step further. In bold italics it exclaims: “Drunk people cannot give consent.” By this logic, of course, all drunk sex is rape. Only this particular article, like most articles on the subject, places the ‘rapist’ label squarely on the shoulders of the man. The obvious question: if both are drunk, and both are unable to consent, but then both have sex, why is the man the only rapist in the transaction? … [Read more...]

Keeping the “Unity of the Body” Without Being a Martyr: You Have the Right to Protect Yourself

Bambam

by Suzanne Titkemeyer cross posted from her blog Seeking The Light How emotionally triggering has the last week or so been? So triggering that last night I had to post this on my Facebook wall: "Dear Former Fellow Church Members From Raccoon Ford Christian Fellowship - If you are not currently on my friends list and someone I actually still have a positive relationship with please do not send me a friends request. If you behaved hatefully towards me when I left the church I really have no desire to be 'friends' now. I've moved on." … [Read more...]

Quoting Quiverfull: Training Out Undesirable Traits in Kids is THAT Simple?

oldfashionedfather

by Owen Strachan of Desiring God in John Piper's new book 'Good: The Joy of Christian Manhood and Womanhood' - from pages 25 to 26 in the introduction. It’s a story of a little boy whose body was weak. He couldn’t walk, and he was carried everywhere he went. Over time, he became needy, weepy, and constantly made requests of those around him. If you saw him, you would have pitied him. He was not even ten years of age and already way behind. … [Read more...]
