Debunking Fundamentalist Christian Myths: Is College Worth the Cost

myth-vs-fact

by James C. Titkemeyer, husband of NLQ Admin Suzanne Titkemeyer and economist at the Bureau of Labor Statistics. Republished from the Monthly Labor Review by permission. (Editor's note: We will be posting articles debunking some of the assumptions held by the fundamentalist evangelical wing of Christianity.  Many homeschooling proponents such as Kevin Swanson, Ladies Against Feminism, the Pearls and others believe that education should end with graduation from homeschooling high school coursework and that college is not necessary. The facts do not support their belief in no college.) College: is it still a smart investment? It’s the end of the school year, and that means … [Read more...]

Quoting Quiverfull: Christians Versus “The Sodomites”

Gayagenda

by Jeramy Anderson from Persevero News - Sodomy: A Cycle of Collapse (Editor's note: While Jeramy doesn't define exactly what he considers a 'sodomite' it seems like he might be talking about the LBGT community, but he could be speaking about any group that doesn't necessarily subscribe to his worldview.) A good comparison would be that of a Homeschool family. Not all are Christian, but many of them are believers. It only makes sense, for the very reason parents Homeschool is because they do not want their children to be engulfed by a false worldview. Furthermore, as they align themselves with Scripture, they rejoice in children, desire to be good stewards by saving instead of wasting … [Read more...]

Christian Reconstruction, ATI, Abuse & Submission – Modesty & Lust: Part 1

pinkflamingos

by SJ Reidhead cross posted from her blog The Pink Flamingo “…A large majority of women may very well stand before God one day with a sea of men around her whom she caused to stumble by modeling her body in a sexy form in front of them….” Stephanus Blignaut Remember the very first episode of WKRP in Cincinnati? Dr. Johnny Fever had just been hired, after wondering up and down the dial.  He had lost his big LA DJ job after saying the forbidden word: booger!  Well, that’s how I feel with this post. … [Read more...]

Quoting Quiverfull: Christian Bakers Are Modern Day Holocaust Jews?

Nazi Cake

From Raw Story - Tony Perkins: Christians forced to bake cakes for gays like forcing  Jews into Nazi ovens Tony doesn't seem to realize the moment you invoke Nazis, Hitler, the Holocaust or the Third Reich you've invalided your own argument by your hyperbole. Perkins reached for a more recent historical analogy to compare the state’s actions to Nazi Germany. … [Read more...]

Convergent Books and Evangelical Imprimatur

divergent

by Samantha Field cross posted from her blog Defeating the Dragons If you’re not familiar with the term imprimatur, it’s a Latin expression that means “let it be printed.” It’s associated with the Roman Catholic Church, and depending on the context, was used to actively censor books that either a) disagreed with the Church’s teaching, or b) could possibly damage the Church’s reputation. Many of these books– banned because they contained “doctrinal or moral error,” supposedly– would appear in the Index Librorum Prohibitorum. Books included in the Index could not be printed, and considering the influence that Roman Catholicism had over Europe during the dawn of … [Read more...]

Growing Up Duggar – Your Relationship With Yourself: Part 1

growing up duggar book cover

by Suzanne Titkemeyer cross posted from her blog True Love Doesn't Rape Page 1 to 9 The chapter starts out with a lot of talk about how wonderful it is that all the girls share the same room before an awkward segue into being self critical over appearance.  "All of us have gone through times when we've felt we needed to lose weight. And we've all looked at the girl in the mirror and sometimes found things that just didn't seem to measure up." … [Read more...]

Farris: Patriarchy Makes Kids Gay and Atheists

michaelfarris

by Libby Anne cross posted from her blog Love, Joy, Feminism If you read my blog, you’re probably aware of the Christian homeschooling subculture’s patriarchy problem. A variety of prominent Christian homeschool leaders have been promoting patriarchal family structures at homeschool conventions and in homeschool publications for well over a decade, and two of those leaders—Bill Gothard and Doug Phillips—have recently fallen, engulfed in scandal. Michael Farris, another prominent Christian homeschool leader, has since come out criticizing these leaders and the “patriarchy” they taught. Now Farris has openly criticized “patriarchy” as part of a keynote address while … [Read more...]

Quoting Quiverfull: Fashion Leads to Lust?

beetlejuice pants

by Stephanus Blignaut from Go Tell My People - Modesty: Discouraging Lust and Encouraging Godliness Women are so easily caught up in “what everyone is doing” or what is available in the shops and what is promoted in magazines and TV. They don’t think about how their body is portrayed and what it causes in men – the stumbling block it becomes for men. Women condemn lust in a man when they see it but somehow they don’t make the connection between the condemnable lust and their own clothes that they are wearing. Not realizing this makes them stand guilty before God as a stumbling stone because of the lust they caused. … [Read more...]

Quoting Quiverfull: Mary Pride Marginalized by Patriarchy?

marginalized

by Karen Campbell from her blog That Mom Mary Pride was one of the first leaders in the modern homeschooling movement. Her book The Way Home was a powerful rebuttal of the radical feminist agenda and she minced no words as she made an appeal for rejecting all sorts of sacred cows. Mary was outspoken and certainly no model of the perfect patriarch wife and ruffled lots of male feathers. One of my fondest memories of homeschooling in the early days (nearly 30 years ago now) is of a conference in the St. Louis area with Gregg Harris, Michael Farris, and Mary … [Read more...]

News: Jack Schaap Trying To Squirm Out Of Sentence

While dress codes are not the issue in the Jack Schaap conviction the same attitudes of sexualizing a teenager and trying to blame her for his own attitudes towards her are the same.

Now Jack Schaap is claiming that he was improperly represented by his legal staff at his trial for violation of the Mann Act and sex with an underaged girl. Schaap is claiming his attorneys promised him a sentence of no more than ten years, yet the judge gave him twelve years. It was fully within the rights of the judge to decide the length of the sentence regardless of what prosecutors  or defense team members asked for as a sentence. … [Read more...]
