by Justin Lookadoo, author of 'R U Dateable?' from Buzz Feed - Texas School Hosts Speaker Who Encourages Girls to 'Shut Up' to be 'Dateable' and from the Dallas Observer - Richardson High Schoolers Learned Today That "Dateable Girls Know How to Shut Up" “You’re a girl. Be proud of all that means. You are soft, you are gentle, you are a woman. Don’t try to be a guy. Guys like you because you are different from them. So let your girly-ness soar.” … [Read more...]

Quoting Quiverfull: Forbidden Fruit

Quotes1-300x250 (2)

by Bill Gothard of ATI from his site billgothard.com - Conquering Temptations: Looking at "Forbidden Fruit" "Forbidden fruit" appeals to the lusts of our flesh, the lusts of our eyes, or the pride of life. "All that is in the world, the lust of the flesh, and the lust of the eyes, and the pride of life, is not of the Father, but is of the world" (1 John 2:16). … [Read more...]

Is Clergy Sexual Infidelity Rare?

infidelity_thumb

by Bruce Gerencser cross posted from his blog The Way ForwardDoug Phillips, of Vision Forum/Vision Forum Ministries, recently confessed that he had an inappropriate sexual relationship with a woman who is not his wife. (see my previous post in this) Defenders of Phillips have taken to their blogs, websites, Twitter, and Facebook, to do damage control on the behalf of Phillips and the patriarchal movement. One such defender is Voddie Baucham, the African-American version of Doug Phillips, sans the scandal. Baucham is an Independent Baptist pastor.  (you can find Baucham’s website here) … [Read more...]

Quoting Quiverfull: Why Buy the Cow When the Milk is Free?

Quotes1-300x250

by Susan Dench of Ladies Against Feminism, SusanDench.com and Bangor Daily NewsMs Dench might or might not be Quiverfull but the fact that Ladies Against Feminism are quoting her makes it likely she is connected to some evangelical patriarchal religion. In the traditional world, women brought out the best in their men, who subsumed their more base instincts as they fought hard to earn and win the respect of the women they loved. Before the sexual revolution, the woman was put on a pedestal, and both sexes expected the man to court her, woo her, fight for her hand, solicit her hard-won affection. Oh, of course there was premarital sex, but it wasn’t as prevalent, and if a girl got p … [Read more...]

Ordeal of the Bitter Waters Part Six

by Samantha cross posted from her blog Defeating the Dragons This is the final post in this series. I wanted to thank everyone who’s been reading and commenting for your support and encouragement as I put all of this into writing– very public writing. I also wanted to note, again, that everything I’ve written here is merely my story– I’m not expecting to convince anyone, merely explain why I’ve changed my mind on this issue so totally. … [Read more...]

Ordeal of the Bitter Waters Part Five

by Samantha cross posted from her blog Defeating the Dragons I puzzled over yarek naphal for days– I dug through commentary after commentary, through lexicons, through concordances, through history books– and what I found was frustrating. Of the people who bothered to remark on what yarek naphal meant, most seemed comfortable assuming that “thigh to rot” was a euphemism for miscarriage– but no one said why. It was usually a short phrase, perhaps a sentence, and then the commentary would move on to explanations why this ritual appeared in Numbers. Exasperated, I ranted for a bit on twitter, and one of my amazing readers, Jennifer, directed me to some resources I am ashamed to say I hadn’t tho … [Read more...]

Ordeal of the Bitter Waters Part Four

by Samantha cross posted from her blog Defeating the Dragons  I stared at what I’d typed into Google. The blinking cursor was silent, patient, waiting for me to hit enter.   Verses in the Bible about abortion.   Blink. Blink. Blink. … [Read more...]

Ordeal of the Bitter Waters Part Three

bitterwaters

by Samantha cross posted from her blog Defeating The DragonsThis is simply my story of how I became pro-choice. I’m not writing this to convince anyone– it was a journey that took years, and what convinced me may not convince anyone else. I believe that writing my story for you is important; in all the reading I did during those years, I only found one person who was willing to explain what she had been through. Hearing her story helped me process what I was going through. I hope it does the same for someone else. … [Read more...]

Ordeal of the Bitter Waters Part 2

bitterwaters

by Samantha cross posted from her blog Defeating the Dragons For this series, I’m going to be monitoring the comments a little more closely than I ordinarily do. I haven’t gotten any comments that I’ve needed to moderate, yet, but I am discussing an incredibly charged issue. I will not tolerate any personal attacks– on me or anyone else. Also, I am not really writing this series to convince anyone. This series is about my story– the road I traveled that brought me to this point. … [Read more...]
