growing up duggar book cover

by the Duggar girls, Jessa, Jinger, Jill and Jana about their upcoming book in People Magazine The young Duggar women also detail in the book the difference between dating and courtship, and why they believe it is important to get to know how young men they are interested in react in "normal family settings.""We want to get acquainted with a young man in a normal family setting, where we'll be watching how he treats our brothers and sisters," they write. Pensacola Christian College and Sexual Abuse Victims

PCC

by Samantha Field cross posted from her blog Defeating The Dragons I’ve never named the college I attended for undergrad– not here, not anywhere else online. I have never brought it up here on my blog because I didn’t want it to become about the specific place I went to college. The problems that exist there exist at most other fundamentalist colleges, and I didn’t want anyone pigeonholing me. I was also  trying to avoid the harassment I personally know comes with critiquing this college in public. … [Read more...]

You Are You (And that’s Beautiful)

haley

by Melissa cross posted from her blog Permission To LiveWe had just moved to a new state, and a new city. Haley had been officially living as herself and presenting as female full-time for only a few days. We made the chilly trek with the kids out to the store to pick out cell phones and sign up for a plan. The person helping us was polite and sweet. He had long dark hair and a delicate face, after we clarified who was Melissa and who was Haley, he put out his hand and said brightly “So nice to meet you! My name is..” and then stuttered and seemed to glance down at the nametag attached to his shirt, finishing quietly “… John.”  We got our phones, and left the shop, but both Haley and I … [Read more...]

Church Statistics and Abuse

sadness

by Samantha Field cross posted from her blog Defeating The Dragons [trigger warning for child sexual abuse, rape, domestic violence] I’m not entirely sure when it happened, but from the reading I’ve been doing, sometime in the last 30 or so years there’s been a subtle shift in how churches talk about growth. What my reading tells me is that this is at least somewhat connected to the rise of the “mega church,” with it becoming impossible for pastoral staffs to simply look around their churches and understand who their congregation is. … [Read more...]

Fascinating Womanhood Review: Happiness

by Samantha Fields cross posted from her blog Defeating The Dragons  So, it’s been a little while since we’ve delved into Helen Andelin’s world. We’re about halfway through the book, and we’ve reached the point where we’re going to start seeing a lot more ridiculous statements. On one hand, it makes it easier for me to demonstrate the absurdity of her beliefs– at times, all I’d have to do is quote what she says and even the most die-hard Vision Forum devotee would roll their eyes– but on the other hand, that makes it seem that what Helen’s promoting is so outdated that no one accepts it anymore.  That is, unfortunately, not true. … [Read more...]
