Cults, Christianity, Toxic Beliefs and Health

backyard

by AJ cross posted from her blog I Am PhoenixI recently separated from a religious cult that I grew up in. During the time I was questioning the beliefs of this cult, I realized that many of these beliefs unfortunately are also foundational beliefs in modern day evangelical Christianity as well. So I ended up leaving not only the cult, but Christianity also. … [Read more...]

My Abusive Relationship Was Typical

Samantha

by Samantha Field cross posted from her blog Defeating The DragonsTrigger warning for abuse and sexual violence Last week, I wrote an article for xoJane and I shared some things about my past that I haven’t shared on the internet before. I don’t enjoy talking about my abusive relationship at all, and I especially avoid thinking about my last semester at PCC, which was nightmarish with exceedingly few good memories. I was extremely vulnerable in that piece, knowing that there would be people around the internet that would shit on it. … [Read more...]

Stand Up and Speak Your Truth

lion

by AJ cross posted from her blog I Am PhoenixI have always had a hard time standing up for myself. I chalk it up to the way I grew up. I grew up in a cult where women and children weren't allowed to speak up for themselves, especially when we were abused. We weren't allowed to ask "Why?" even in a quiet voice. We were to take abuse quietly, submissively, like Godly females would. Otherwise, all hell would break loose. So, my sisters and I grew up with blank, obedient minds. We were trained to obey male authority without question, and we had a healthy fear of the chain of command above us. We were Godly, submissive sheep who obeyed at the blink of an eye. We grew up with no defenses … [Read more...]

by Samantha Field cross posted from her blog Defeating The DragonsIf you’ve never meandered around xoJane, well, now is your golden opportunity. I’ve been a loyal reader for almost a year now, and it’s a pretty cool place. So, when an xoJane editor reached out to me and asked if I’d be willing to tell a piece of my story for them, you can imagine that my reaction looked a bit like this: … [Read more...]

Why Purity Culture Doesn’t Teach Consent

phlox

by Samantha Field cross posted from her blog Defeating The Dragons I’m a Star Trek fan, and yes– it’s related. I grew up watching Star Trek loyally, and I’m pretty sure Captain Kathryn Janeway is one of the few reasons why I managed to be somewhat normal. So, when Enterprise began airing, I watched every single episode, and Phlox, a Denobulan doctor, quickly became one of my favorites. “The Breach” is one of the few episodes dedicated to his character, and it explores an ethical dilemma: … [Read more...]

Quoting Quiverfull: That Dirty ‘P’ Word – Patriarchy

patriarchy

by James McDonald from Ladies Against Feminism and Every Thought Captive Magazine from Highlands Ministries In our day, there is a great battle over how words are defined. This happens often in the political arena where the words “liberal” and “conservative” seem to take on a different meaning depending on who is using them. … [Read more...]

There’s No Easy Way to Get “Well”

J.D.Salinger

by Lisa Kerr cross posted from her blog My Cult LifeA little more backstory on why I took an extended break from the blog:I became a recluse. I’m not about to compare myself to J.D. Salinger, but I will say I understand him. If you don’t know, he’s the author of The Catcher in the Rye. As his book’s popularity grew, Salinger withdrew from the public. He published less new work and cut off contact with people. … [Read more...]

by Steven L Anderson Pastor of Faithful Word Baptist Church as quoted by Alter Net - Pastor Who Prayed For Obama's Death Has a New Cause: Shutting Women Up In Church“Now obviously, before the service begins, there’s chatting and talking going on, that’s perfectly legitimate. When we all sing praises to God, of course the ladies should also lift up their voices,” Anderson, who is also anti-gay, said.  But once services begin, it’s shut-up time. … [Read more...]
