When Church Hurts: Part 5

scienceoftruth

by Ellen cross posted from her blog When Church HurtsFor a few years, I had the privilege of serving in my church in several ways. I took classes, my husband and I took care of a significant portion of the landscape (which had been sorely neglected) – creating sacred spaces for people to find quiet time with the Lord, and I assisted with preparing food for Sunday morning fellowship. I also had the opportunity to teach classes over our final year there. … [Read more...]

When Church Hurts: Part 3

worshipteam

by Ellen cross posted from her blog When Church Hurts One day I received a call from the new pastor at another church in the same town. They were looking for a person to direct the choir and lead some worship teams. I ended up resigning from my position at the Bible college to work for this church. I made it clear that I would come and lead their music ministry, but I was not interested in leaving my church.  They accepted my position and I was there for almost two years.  During that time I discovered that they were a very divisive congregation who spent a great deal of time expressing what they were against – whether it had to do with music or youth ministry or the way the pla … [Read more...]

Mary Pride denies founding the Quiverfull movement?

by Vyckie Garrison (Editor's Note: This was originally published on NLQ back around three or four years ago. Sharing again as it seems appropriate in light of our recent discussions about Mary Pride)A couple months back, I received an email from Mary Pride -- apparently, she's feeling the pressure since Frank Schaeffer mentioned her in his latest book, Sex, Mom & God, and has been talking in various interviews about her role in founding the Quiverfull and Christian Patriarchy movements with her book, The Way Home: Beyond Feminism and Back to Reality. If you Google "Mary Pride" -- NLQ comes up 4th on the results page -- I'm guessing that's how she ended up emailing me: … [Read more...]

What is the Bravest Thing You’ve Ever Done?

liontiger

by AJ cross posted from her blog I am PhoenixThe bravest thing I have done so far in my life has been allowing myself to feel.I was able to make it as far as I did  in life appearing on the outside to be normal and functional because I buried the past. Completely. I didn't talk about it to anyone, and I didn't acknowledge it to myself.Being numb to it was the only way I could survive. I purposely hung around with people who didn't talk about feelings or emotional things. I buried who I was, even if it meant I also had to bury my intuition, my creativity, my feelings, my empathy, and any form of introspection. … [Read more...]

1971-1972 Good Baptist Boys Don’t Dance

bruce-gerencser-1971

by Bruce Gerenscer cross posted from his blog The Way ForwardNinth grade school picture, wearing the welfare glasses I got in 1971. It took me all of 4 weeks to earn enough money to get a pair wire rimmed glasses. I was so embarrassed to wear these glasses. Everyone knew our family was on welfare. It’s September of 1971 and I am fourteen and a ninth grade student at Central Junior High School in Findlay, Ohio. It’s time for gym class and today we are going to square dance. Except I won’t be square dancing because the church I attended, Trinity Baptist Church, considered dancing a sin. … [Read more...]
