Feeling Empathy for Christian Patriarchy Parents & Leaders

by Heather Doney cross posted from her blog Becoming WorldlyI did a couple things I never expected to do yesterday. I had a thought-provoking conversation that left me thinking about how it is easy to decide that someone is an enemy, a jerk, a selfish person. It is easy to determine that people are unworthy, undeserving, maybe even unclean. It is easy for them to decide that about you too. … [Read more...]

ALTM: Chapter 2 – Babies, Babies, BABIES!

I had the hardest time reading chapter two and writing about it. Every time I tried to read I was triggered and sickened, preferring to hide under the covers of my nice warm bed and eat popcorn instead of reading and writing. As always the Duggars started this chapter with a Bible verse. Luckily this time they actually had the correct verse number - “God blessed them and God said unto them, Be fruitful, and multiply.” - Genesis 1: 28. But I have to wonder why they lopped off the backside of 1:28, you know, all that jazz about filling and subduing the earth and its critters. … [Read more...]

Quoting Quiverfull: Suffering Suffering?

From the new book by Tim Keller that John Piper of Desiring God and pals are promoting - Walking Through Pain and Suffering “Some suffering is given in order to chastise and correct a person for wrongful patterns of life (as in the case of Jonah imperiled by the storm), some suffering is given not to correct past wrongs but to prevent future ones (as in the case of Joseph sold into slavery), and some suffering has no purpose other than to lead a person to love God more ardently for himself alone and so discover the ultimate peace and freedom.” Comments open belowQUOTING QUIVERFULL is a regular feature of NLQ – we present the actual words of noted Quiverfull leaders and ask our readers: … [Read more...]

The “Jezebel Spirit” Teaching: Priming Churches for Spiritual Abuse

by Kristen Rosser cross posted from her blog Wordgazer's WordsIt's a story my husband Jeff likes to tell from before we were married. We were both members of a coercive Christian group of "charismatic" persuasion-- meaning that the group believed in supernatural gifts of the Holy Spirit.  Like most charismatic groups, our church believed that Christians and churches could be harassed by, or even come under the power of, demonic spirits. We believed God had called us to "rebuke" such spirits in the name of Jesus and drive them out of our lives and the lives of others. … [Read more...]

Raised to be a Monster

by Samantha cross posted from her blog Defeating the Dragons I sat on the couch in the nursery, playing with some loose threads while I watched Mrs. Grace* entertain the baby on her lap. She’d been playing peekabo for the past few minutes when she suddenly saw the baby, Anna*, notice her necklace. It was an antique pendant watch with delicate scroll work, and Anna seem fascinated by the movement of the hands. Mrs. Grace dangled the pendant in front of her, telling her “it’s ok, you can touch it, go ahead.” I watched as Anna turned to look at her mother who was sitting across the room. Mrs. Dianna slowly shook her head, pursed her lips, frowned, and made a subtle wagging motion w … [Read more...]

Quoting Quiverfull: Feminism Misunderstood by LAF?

by Ladies Against Feminism -Feminism Rejects Feminism: We're Doing Our Best to Achieve the Impossible Feminists are finding their legacy, unrealistic, misdirected, negligent and confusing. This article is an insider’s perspective on the realities of feminism and an interesting discussion (perpetuated by lies or shall we say redefining of the facts) on what the answer is supposed to be. Feminism’s expectations are still impossible and unrealistic either way. They’ve created a generation of confused misguided women who hopefully will realize they’ve been lied to. Once again, we have the answer to a fulfilling life. Caution: Swear words on sidebar"When the expectation that they could “have … [Read more...]

Courting a Stranger

by Samantha cross posted from her blog Defeating the DragonsThis week, the Duggars announced that their daughter, Jessa, had begun a “courtship” with Ben Seewald. News articles have been floating around in my facebook feed about this, and as I read a few of them . . . my heart sank. Many people are mocking the family, Jessa, Ben, her parents, for how they’ve chosen to handle this. I can’t get behind the mocking. All I can feel right now is compassion for Jessa and Ben. It’s an emotion they might dismiss as completely unwarranted– from all appearances, they’re blissfully happy, and this courtship is what they’ve always envisioned for themselves. I don’t know about Ben, but everything I’ve … [Read more...]
