NLQ FAQ: Why Do You Call Quiverfull Legalistic?

by Kristen Rosser ~ aka: KR Wordgazer People keep saying Quiverfull is “legalistic.” But it’s not! We don’t live the Quiverfull lifestyle as a way to win God's favor or to earn our salvation. We do it because we love Jesus, and Jesus said that if we love Him we will keep His commandments. So long as your reason for doing what you are doing is not to earn God's love but rather as a grateful response to His love for you ~ then it's not legalism. Aren’t people who call us “legalistic” just being negative? It’s true that legalism is often defined by Christians strictly in terms of whether a person is doing “works” to attain salvation or win God’s favor. As Paul said in … [Read more...]

Visionary daughters quiz

Over on the NLQ forum, we've all been taking Visionary Daughter's "Are You A Fool?" quiz ~ it's annoyingly hilarious ~ and I thought No Longer Quivering readers who aren't on the forum might like the chance to join in on the fun. (Sometimes I roll my eyes.) 3) If I get criticized for the same thing enough times, I usually start to take it seriously.. 4) I’m thankful for the smallest hint of reproof and take it very seriously. Take the Quiz!! What do you think? Post your comments below ~ or join the forum to participate in this and many other … [Read more...]

Created To Be His Help Meet ~ An Open Letter to Debi Pearl

by Africaturtle Dear Debi, It’s been a few years now since I read your book Created to be His Help Meet for the first time. I am married to a Mr. Command Man, as per your book’s description. My mom gave me your book for Christmas the first year I was married (six years ago now). She told me it was the best book she had read on the subject, and after reading it I was convinced it was too. (I had already read many other Christian books and periodicals on godly womanhood, including those of Mary Pride, Nancy Campbell, and a few from Vision Forum.) As a new wife and soon-to-be mother (I was pregnant within the first month after our wedding) I soaked up all of your stories and advice, … [Read more...]

NLQ FAQ: Is No Longer Quivering an Atheist Website?

by Vyckie I recently received an email from "Henrietta" who asked: If I choose to get involved here, contribute etc, am I part of a Christian but anti QFP group; or an anti Christian and esp anti QFP group? It is ironic that NLQ seems to be perceived quite differently depending on the perspective of the reader. We have several new readers who are commenting here on the blog ~ conservative, Quiverfull Christians who are convinced that NLQ is nothing but angry, pro-abortion, Feminazi Atheists.  On the other hand, MoJoey at "Deep Thoughts" recently promoted NLQ with the caveat: Now granted, No Longer Quivering is a Christian site and I don’t normally pimp out the opposition but the … [Read more...]

NLQ FAQ: The Bible and the Nature of Woman

Note:  Before reading this, please read the “Quiverfull and the Bible” FAQ.  Like the “nobleminded Bereans” (Acts 17:11), we are entitled to study for ourselves, so that we may read the Biblical text in an informed manner.  That FAQ provides the background for the method of informed Bible reading used here. by Kristen Rosser ~ aka: KR Wordgazer Q: Doesn't the Bible say I was created to be my husband's helpmeet, that God designed me to joyfully give myself to my husband's vision for our family? To see what God's plan and purpose for women is, we need to go back to the beginning-- Genesis 1.  What is the first thing the Bible says about women? "And God said, Let Us make man … [Read more...]

Testing the Spirit of Quiverfull: Hierarchy & Control

by Kristen Rosser ~ aka: KR Wordgazer  Beloved, believe not every spirit, but try the spirits whether they are of God: because many false prophets are gone out into the world. I John 4:1 Also of your own selves shall men arise, speaking perverse things, to draw away disciples after them. Acts 20:30 Stand fast therefore in the liberty wherewith Christ hath made us free, and be not entangled again with the yoke of bondage.”  Galatians 5:1 The above passages warn us that not every movement that says it is following Christ and His teachings, actually is.  How can we know the difference? Jesus said “Ye shall know them by their fruits. (Matthew 7:16).”  Galatians 5:22-23 says that … [Read more...]

NLQ FAQ: The Bible & Birth Control

Note:  Before reading this, please read the “Quiverfull and the Bible” FAQ.  Like the “nobleminded Bereans” (Acts 17:11), we are entitled to study for ourselves, so that we may read the Biblical text in an informed manner.  That FAQ provides the background for the method of informed Bible reading used here. by Kristen Rosser ~ aka: KR Wordgazer Q:  Doesn’t the Bible say we are to receive as many children as God blesses us with, and that birth control is against His plan? Let’s look at the passage on children being a blessing, Psalm 127:3. Lo, children are an heritage of the Lord, and the fruit of the womb is his reward.  As arrows in the hand of a mighty man, so are the … [Read more...]

Testing the Spirit of Quiverfull: Isolation

by Kristen Rosser ~ aka: KR Wordgazer Beloved, believe not every spirit, but try the spirits whether they are of God: because many false prophets are gone out into the world. Even when there is sincere desire to follow Christ, the ways beliefs are practiced, instead of bringing healing and liberty, can bring pain … [Read more...]

NLQ FAQ: How did you get yourself into this mess?

Jonathan W. Rice (jwr) In late 2009, I learned that a journalist had written a book about the Quiverfull movement.[1]  I ordered the book and also discovered an online forum for survivors and refugees who’d fled from it (No Longer Quivering).  As far back as 1989, I’d known several families who fit the description but could never really understand their rationale.  I hoped the NLQ forum and the book might shed some light on their beliefs. I was not disappointed. In mid-February 2010, a thread title on the forum caught my eye: How did you get yourself into this mess?  The author, a female refugee from the movement, was wondering how she and so many others could have fallen for it … [Read more...]

NLQ FAQ: Does Patriarchy Glorify God?

by Kristen Rosser ~ aka: KR Wordgazer   Q: As a Quiverfull couple, we practice headship and submission to strengthen our marriage and bring glory to God.  But you are saying that Patriarchy hurts the husband and belittles God.  Please explain. What does “glorify” mean when we’re talking about God?  A simple definition can be found in what we commonly mean when we say a person is “seeking glory.”  It means that person wants the credit for good things that have happened, and to be honored for those things.  To glorify God is to seek glory not for ourselves, but for God-- to act in ways that point to God, that give God the credit for good things in our lives and the honor that … [Read more...]
