CTBHHM: Esther and Her Mother

created

by Libby Anne cross posted from her blog Love, Joy, FeminismCreated To Be His Help Meet, pp. 182—183We’re still in the chapter on loving your children. Remember, Debi has told women to love their children by loving their husbands, and to love their children by not concentrating too much on loving Jesus. Now, for the first time, we actually turn to loving the children themselves. “Train up a child in the way he should go: and when he is old, he will not depart from it” (Proverbs 22:6). … [Read more...]

Quoting Quiverfull: Shy Children Must Be Trained Out Of It?

shy child girl

from No Greater Joy magazine by Shalom Pearl Brand - Three Types of Children, Part 3: Building Confidence (Steady/Servant Type) Don’t let your children be shy; help them overcome their fears and reach out to others. Observe your children and determine what is causing them to be shy. Is it only when someone talks to them, or is it all the time? Then, create an environment where you are in control and can train them to be confident. Do not push them to the point that they are afraid. … [Read more...]

by Cindy Foster cross posted from her blog Baptist Taliban and Beyond(Editor's note: This was originally published on Baptist Taliban and Beyond on September 14, 2011 but the issue remains a crucial one in recovery as long as places like these and Hephzibah House remain open. The physical and emotional damage to children continues as long as these places exist.) … [Read more...]

Emotional Control: Mandatory Happiness Makes Me Sad

happiness

by SierraI recently joined Pinterest. I resisted for a little while, like I always do, but eventually decided that it would be a convenient way to store ideas for home decorating (I just moved house) and wedding planning (for next fall). The result was my sudden … [Read more...]

A Philosophy That Destroys a Life

nightmare

By Incongruous CircumspectionThe morning was like any other morning I remembered.  The bright sun was shining through the single pane windows, teasing you into thinking that the frigid winter air outside would stay behind the glass, rather than leaking past the crumbling putty.  Shivering, I … [Read more...]

“Biblical” Parenting, Criticism #1: A Parent Who Assumes The Worst

by LatebloomerThe task of reviewing Reb Bradley's book "Child Training Tips" has been a lot more challenging than I expected.  First of all, where do I start when I disagree with almost every sentence that this book contains?  I can find almost no common ground on which to begin.  And how can I explain my reasons for disagreement when the very things that I see as horrifying are held up as admirable goals by the author?Because of these difficulties, I have decided that these posts will simply be a way for Present Me to explain to Past Me that this so-called "Biblical" parenting is damaging to individuals and relationships because it sacrifices all other virtues for the sake of au … [Read more...]

Dispelled: Part 10

chandra

by ChandraIt didn’t take long for myself and Darren’s lengthy friendship to turn from dating to committed to one another. We were very much in love, and our voluminous email correspondence had already paved the ground for much of our relationship. I was so happy- I had met the man that I had been dreaming about marrying since I was old enough to dream about getting married. As a homeschool girl, getting married and having a family was something that was very near and dear to my heart. I had thought about going to school, and I wanted to go to college, but the fact that my parents did not allow me to take the ACT or SAT tests-and they offered no other form of assistance- left m … [Read more...]

Baptist Taliban: Part 3

by Cindy FosterTHE CHURCH WE WEREThe Preacher and his wife graduated from Baptist Bible College in Springfield, Missouri. At the time he attended there, the college was quite conservative. There were strict rules about dress, dating, curfews, entertainment, music and much more. The Preacher actually grew up in Springfield and was a member of a church that was not nearly as rigid in its standards as the college was, so in the beginning of his ministry as pastor, he did not have the extreme beliefs that he eventually embraced later in his ministry. It was several years after the church had started and was established with its own building that the more relaxed climate began … [Read more...]

Westboro Baptist Church comment on No Longer Quivering: Judge who sentenced child abuser “clearly wasn’t spanked enough as a child”

Westboro Baptist Church No Longer Quivering

by Vyckie GarrisonI just came across this graphic on Facebook. We recently had someone from Westboro Baptist Church post a hate-filled, bible-thumping comment on No Longer Quivering - guess we must be doing something right to have attracted WBC's attention. (◕‿◕✿) Dane County Judge Maryann Sumi sentenced Pastor Philip Caminiti to 2 years in prison for preaching the standard of God Almighty as spelled out in the scriptures. This unjust judge swung her judicial gavel at God and the clear teachings of the Bible on how to love one’s children: “He that spareth his rod hateth his son: but he that loveth him chasteneth him betimes.” (Proverbs 13:24). Judge Sumi called it conspiracy to commit ch … [Read more...]
