Christmas: A Plea To Evangelicals Who Evangelize Non-Christian Family Members

The Titkemeyer living room during Christmas. Image by Suzanne Titkemeyer

by Bruce Gerencser cross posted from his blog The Life and Times of Bruce GerencserChristmas: it’s that time of year.  Joy to the World. Handel’s Messiah. Cookies and fudge. Eggnog. Shopping. Evergreen trees decked with ornaments and lights. Cards. Presents. Ugly sweaters. Family gatherings. Excited grandchildren.  Ah, the wonders of the Christmas season. But there’s one aspect of Christmas hated by non-Christians, and that’s their Evangelical relatives and friends using the holiday as an opportunity to evangelize those they deem lost and headed for hell. … [Read more...]

How Fundamentalist Christians Ruin Christmas

A rather smeary Christmas image by Suzanne Titkemeyer

by Bruce Gerencser cross posted from his blog The Life and Times of Bruce GerencserNow that I am no longer a Christian, I really enjoy Christmas. I know this might be hard for fundamentalist Christians to believe, but I enjoy Christmas now more than I ever did when I was a card-carrying member of Club Christian®. The reason is simple. From Thanksgiving to New Year’s, there were services to prepare, food drives to coördinate, and season-themed sermons to preach. Like the Easter season, Christmas was a high-stress, lots-of-work time for me. Quite frankly, I found it exhausting. Rarely did I have the time to just relax and enjoy Christmas. … [Read more...]

Quoting Quiverfull: Have Yourself Some Merry Little Selfishness?

grinch

by Jay Younts of Shepherd Press - Avoiding Disappoint Christmas morningNot getting the gift that is wanted can happen for several reasons. The budget dictates trips to Walmart instead of the mall. Usually this kind of disappointment can be addressed with a loving dose of reality given well in advance of Christmas Day. Sometimes, the giver is simply unaware of what is going on inside the person to whom he is giving the gift. A little more sensitivity  and careful listening would help here.  … [Read more...]

Daughter of the Patriarchy: Two Snakes and a Virgin – The Serpent’s Seed

by SierraI was about nine years old when I started paying attention to some of the doctrines that were slowly infiltrating my life over the past two years. I’d stopped wearing pants or cutting my hair by the end of the first year, following my mother’s lead. The last pair of pants she wore were a lovely pair of wide-leg trousers with a sheer lace overlay; they could pass for a skirt until she took a step. She wore them to church, then threw them away – she felt “convicted” for wearing a man’s garment. She threw away her makeup, too, keeping only a sheer moisturizing lip gloss as a token of her past.I liked my new dresses, and I liked the long hair slowly descended across my shoulders. I’ … [Read more...]
