The Cult of Masculinity ~ Part 2: Emasculation

This is part 2 of a review of the chapter titled, "The Cult of Masculinity" from Chris Hedges' book, American Fascists: The Christian Right and the War on America. Click here for part 1.by Vyckie"The hypermasculinity of radical Christian conservativism, which crushes the independence and self-expression of women, is a way for men in the movement to compensate for the curtailing of their own independence, their abject obedience to church authorities and the calls for sexual restraint."Chris Hedges hit the nail on the head in this chapter when he explains the paradox of the "Cult of Masculinity" ~ on the one hand, fundamentalist believers are infantilized ~ taken back to the security … [Read more...]

The Cult of Masculinity ~ Part 1: Roberta's Story

by VyckieSeveral years ago when I first began corresponding with my uncle, Ron, he referred me to an article on Alternet about Christian Dominionism ~ this was my first introduction to Chris Hedges, author of American Fascists: The Christian Right and the War on America. I was amazed ~ and as a devoted Christian, more than a little perturbed ~ at Hedges insight into what motivates radical fundamentalist Christians ~ namely, fear, self-loathing, and the culture of despair. I identified with the pro-life women whom Hedges interviewed, and was quite dismayed to find that I actually agreed with his conclusion:Those who lead the movement give their followers a moral license to direct this … [Read more...]

Testing the Spirit of Quiverfull: Hierarchy & Control

by Kristen Rosser ~ aka: KR Wordgazer Beloved, believe not every spirit, but try the spirits whether they are of God: because many false prophets are gone out into the world. I John 4:1Also of your own selves shall men arise, speaking perverse things, to draw away disciples after them. Acts 20:30Stand fast therefore in the liberty wherewith Christ hath made us free, and be not entangled again with the yoke of bondage.”  Galatians 5:1The above passages warn us that not every movement that says it is following Christ and His teachings, actually is.  How can we know the difference?Jesus said “Ye shall know them by their fruits. (Matthew 7:16).”  Galatians 5:22-23 says that out of the … [Read more...]

Testing the Spirit of Quiverfull: Isolation

by Kristen Rosser ~ aka: KR WordgazerBeloved, believe not every spirit, but try the spirits whether they are of God: because many false prophets are gone out into the world. Even when there is sincere desire to follow Christ, the ways beliefs are practiced, instead of bringing healing and liberty, can bring pain a … [Read more...]

NLQ FAQ: How did you get yourself into this mess?

Jonathan W. Rice (jwr)In late 2009, I learned that a journalist had written a book about the Quiverfull movement.[1]  I ordered the book and also discovered an online forum for survivors and refugees who’d fled from it (No Longer Quivering).  As far back as 1989, I’d known several families who fit the description but could never really understand their rationale.  I hoped the NLQ forum and the book might shed some light on their beliefs. I was not disappointed. In mid-February 2010, a thread title on the forum caught my eye: How did you get yourself into this mess?  The author, a female refugee from the movement, was wondering how she and so many others could have fallen for it in the fi … [Read more...]

Why Did She Do That?!

Rachel Scott's crazy-making tactics on the Joy Behar Show  Look, Mimi~ I'm on TV!  LOLWhen I first received the phone call asking me to go to New York to be interviewed on the Joy Behar Show ~ I had to admit that I had no idea who Joy Behar is.  "I am still pretty culturally illiterate after all my years as a fundamentalist Quiverfuller," I explained.  "We do have cable TV now, but the kids keep it tuned to the Disney Channel."  So, I can tell you all about Demi Levato, Selena Gomez, the Jonas Brothers, Miley Cyrus ... in fact, I think I've got Hannah Montana's basic hairstyle ... :)Anyway ... I quickly brought myself up to speed on Joy ~ and on Tuesday, Nov. 3 ~ I had the opportunity t … [Read more...]

Christian Dominionism ~ Part 4: Erik Prince and the Ties that Bind Extremist Politics to Christian Patriarchy

by kmPart 1 | Part 2 | Part 3 | Part 4 Most everyone has heard by now about the Blackwater corporation (recently renamed Xe due to bad PR) and the staggering criminal enterprise that it has perpetuated in the name of the U.S. War on Terror.  Even such farcical news establishments as Fox have been unable to ignore the veritable shitstorm that has erupted in the wake of the Bush administration over Xe’s unholy alliance with the United States government.  One thing that has not been widely reported, however, is Xe’s Dominionist allegiance, up to and including the fact that its former CEO—and now chairman—Erik Prince, is the biological heir apparent to the U.S. Dominionist community.  The son … [Read more...]

The problem with Quiverfull isn't in its advocacy of large families …

What's NLQ Carnival Days, you might ask? It's arguably the most awesome idea for blog promotion that I've ever seen, and while every blog we blogroll is worthy in its own way, No Longer Quivering is one to which you ought to be paying attention, as the teabagger lunatics take over the Republican Party. Vyckie of NLQ started the blog to tell her story of her "escape" from the Quiverfull movement. The problem with Quiverfull isn't in its advocacy of large families, it's in its view of women, and in questions about just how much "free will" is involved with women who become embroiled in its clutches. Kathryn Joyce wrote about Quiverfull, and about Vyckie, back in March, and what emerges is … [Read more...]

Raising My Daughter to be a Keeper at Home: Maybe, maybe not!

by HopewellRecently in blog land there has been a good deal of discussion over whether daughters should be sent to college and prepared for careers or if they should be trained to be keepers at home and remain in their parents’ home until marriage. A lot of prayer and thought has gone into these posts. The Scriptural Authority for daughters remaining at home seems to be found here:3 "When a woman makes a vow to God and binds herself by a pledge as a young girl still living in her father's house, 4 and her father hears of her vow or pledge but says nothing to her, then she has to make good on all her vows and pledges. 5 But if her father holds her back when he hears of what she has done, … [Read more...]

Christian Dominionism ~ Part 3: Bill Gothard and the Ties that Bind Extremist Politics to Christian Patriarchy

by kmPart 1 | Part 2 | Part 3 | Part 4 You will never meet a homeschooler in North America who hasn’t heard of Bill Gothard.  Gothard has become a rich man from peddling his homeschooling program—Advanced Training Institute of America (ATIA)—and his self help seminars—the Institute in Basic Life Principles, the Advanced Seminar, the Anger Resolution Seminar, the Children’s Institute, and the Total Health Seminar.  There is something very surreal about attending any Gothard event for the first time.  In return for the $60 price of admission, you get to watch videos of Gothard espousing his philosophies of Christian patriarchy and Bible-based child abuse, usually whilst producing a paint-by-n … [Read more...]
