Time Heals All Wounds ~ Part 6: Cecelia's Secret

All beautiful the march of days, as seasons come and go; The Hand that shaped the rose hath wrought the crystal of the snowby Shelly CruzThe secret was "ATI", which stands for, "Advanced Training Institute." This was a word of mouth ultra-conservative home school program Cecilia told me about. It taught "Character First." It made children obedient, God fearing individuals, Cecilia explained to me. Cecilia shared examples of how much more obedient children were who were taught with this style of curriculum. How these children differed from other children.I was intrigued, and wanted to find out more about it. This was what I have been waiting to hear. If Cecilia's children were walking, … [Read more...]

Surgery for Tubal Pregnancy Deemed an Elective Abortion??? The Discussion of Vision Forum’s Fiat Raises More Questions

A follow-up to:Vision Forum, Samaritan Ministries Take Extreme “Pro-Life” Position on Ectopic PregnanciesFollowing the previous post about Vision Forum’s plans to advance their thesis regarding surgical treatment for tubal pregnancy before confirmed death of an unborn baby as the ethical equivalent of elective abortion, several insightful questions have been presented in different areas around the blogosphere including the NLQ Forum.  They are worth noting. The discussion raised some interesting questions about the actual risk (morbidity and mortality) related to ectopic pregnancy as weighed against the chance of a non-tubal ectopic pregnancy producing a live birth.  Refer to this H … [Read more...]

Vision Forum, Samaritan Ministries Take Extreme "Pro-Life" Position on Ectopic Pregnancies

In the name of "Right to Life" Quiverfull moms could lose their livesIn June of 2008, Vision Forum posed the following question from their Witherspoon School of Law and Public Policy on its website:  “If abortion is the murder of a human being, is it biblical to oppose all abortions?”  The organization addressed this topic in a series of blog posts on the matter, determining definitively that tubal ectopic pregnancy did not justify surgery to remove the fatally compromised fetus along with a pregnant woman’s fallopian tube. Despite the medical fact that tubal pregnancies prove to be fatal to the fetus in all cases, the Vision Forum group determined that any surgery which ends any ectopic … [Read more...]

Time Heals All Wounds ~ Part 5: A Leap of Faith

All beautiful the march of days, as seasons come and go; The Hand that shaped the rose hath wrought the crystal of the snowby Shelly CruzOur family was planning an out of state move soon. My husband had been praying about our life up North. For him, everything seemed mundane, so he started praying that if the Lord had more for us, he would have to shake things up a bit. For me, I felt that everything had already been shaken up enough. As always, the Lord answered my husband’s prayer almost instantly. The job that he thought he was going to have until retirement became very stressful for him. When folks at work found out that he was a believer, they started playing little tricks on him. … [Read more...]

God gave them brains too

Why Michelle Duggar might not be done yet by VyckieThe Internet is buzzing with news of the premature birth of Josie Brooklyn Duggar ~ Michelle's 19th child, who was delivered via emergency c-section last Thursday at only 25 weeks gestation and weighing a mere 1 lb. 6 oz. Kate Harding, at Salon.com pointedly asks the question of the hour: Baby No. 19 is born extremely premature; will Michelle's god ever give the poor woman a break?  Of interest to me, is a comment on Kate's article: God gave them brains too ~ So why don't they use them instead of their reproductive organs? Trust in God but use your head, otherwise you are insulting God by behaving as if you have no choice in the ma … [Read more...]

Raising My Daughter to be a Keeper at Home: Maybe, maybe not!

by HopewellRecently in blog land there has been a good deal of discussion over whether daughters should be sent to college and prepared for careers or if they should be trained to be keepers at home and remain in their parents’ home until marriage. A lot of prayer and thought has gone into these posts. The Scriptural Authority for daughters remaining at home seems to be found here:3 "When a woman makes a vow to God and binds herself by a pledge as a young girl still living in her father's house, 4 and her father hears of her vow or pledge but says nothing to her, then she has to make good on all her vows and pledges. 5 But if her father holds her back when he hears of what she has done, … [Read more...]

Christian Dominionism ~ Part 3: Bill Gothard and the Ties that Bind Extremist Politics to Christian Patriarchy

by kmPart 1 | Part 2 | Part 3 | Part 4 You will never meet a homeschooler in North America who hasn’t heard of Bill Gothard.  Gothard has become a rich man from peddling his homeschooling program—Advanced Training Institute of America (ATIA)—and his self help seminars—the Institute in Basic Life Principles, the Advanced Seminar, the Anger Resolution Seminar, the Children’s Institute, and the Total Health Seminar.  There is something very surreal about attending any Gothard event for the first time.  In return for the $60 price of admission, you get to watch videos of Gothard espousing his philosophies of Christian patriarchy and Bible-based child abuse, usually whilst producing a paint-by-n … [Read more...]

Christian Dominionism ~ Part 1: The Ties that Bind Extremist Politics to Christian Patriarchy

by kmPart 1 | Part 2 | Part 3 | Part 4 In recent years, most popular culture discussions of the Christian Quiverfull movement center on the charming Duggar family of TLC reality fame.  The Duggars—parents of eighteen children with another on the way—are seen by many as a wholesome—if quirky—example of a healthy family with astoundingly polite and well-behaved children.  It is nearly impossible to have a discussion with a well-meaning Quiverfull-illiterate without hearing that familiar refrain: “They just seem like such nice people!”  It’s not uncommon to find secular people who find themselves drawn to the Quiverfull lifestyle based on what they perceive as such a healthy—and happy—home l … [Read more...]

by VyckieMichelle Duggar with her children after the birth of baby #18The news at People.com is that the Duggar family is joyously anticipating the arrival of their newest baby in the spring."I love all of this, it is so fun," says Michelle. "Anna and I will have babies five months apart."According to the article, there are "no health concerns" for 42-year-old Michelle.  "Some women are made to have babies, and Michelle is to the nth degree," ob-gyn Amy Sarver told PEOPLE in December.
