The Iglesia ni Cristo (Church of Christ) Indoctrinates Children to Obey Church Leaders

by Bruce Gerencser cross posted from his blog The Life and Times of Bruce GerencserWhat follows is a video put out by The Iglesia ni Cristo (Church of Christ), a “Christian religion whose primary purpose is to worship the Almighty God based on His teachings as taught by the Lord Jesus Christ and as recorded in the Bible. The Church of Christ is a church for every one who will heed the call of God and embrace its faith — regardless of his or her nationality, cultural background, social standing, economic status, and educational attainment.” (website) … [Read more...]

Purging My Taliban Ways

by Cindy Foster cross posted from her blog Finding FundamentalI was strolling down the aisles at Sam’s Wholesale Club one day about a year or so after leaving the church, and in the book aisle I noticed a book written by a woman from Afghanistan. It was obvious from the cover that she was a Muslim living under Taliban rule. I picked it up and began looking it over as I do with any book that piques my curiosity. I turned it over to read the back cover and was instantly captivated by what I saw. There written, was a list of rules imposed and strictly enforced on women under Taliban rule. … [Read more...]

How Should Churches Handle Allegations of Abuse?

by Bruce Gerencser cross posted from his blog The Life and Times of Bruce GerencserHow should churches handle allegations of abuse? Let me state right up front that I do not think churches shouldn’t “handle” anything.  This is what gets churches, pastors, and church leaders into trouble to start with. Instead of immediately doing the right thing when someone makes an allegation of abuse, pastors and church members often: … [Read more...]

Quoting Quiverfull: Your Entire Identity Is As A Mother?

by Steven L Anderson of Faithful Word Baptist Church - The Effects of Birth ControlEditor's note: So much ignorance and fear mongering in a few short paragraphs. That bit at the end about green plasma caused by birth control pills is especially ridiculous considering there are also other circumstances that cause green plasma - the coloration is completely harmless.  It's not 'poisoning' like Anderson claims. He doesn't seem to realize that not every woman is cut to be a stay at home mother. It does speak to the fear of everything outside the canon of fundamentalism that drives churches like the IFB. … [Read more...]

Quoting Quiverfull: Being Hated Is Godly?

by Steven L. Anderson from Faithful Word Baptist Church - You are the reason people hate Christians!Editor's note: Perfect illustration of what Christian Martyrbating looks like. If his goal is to get people to hate him I'd say he's well accomplished that. Anderson is coming to DC in September to do another 'soul winning' on the streets. … [Read more...]

Quoting Quiverfull: GPS Is A Sin?

Heard on the radio from an unknown Independent Fundamentalist Pastor while driving through West Virginia. Paraphrased from a random radio sermon.Editor's note: Heard this yesterday while traveling through a remote rural part of West Virginia. Didn't catch the name of the pastor or his church, just that he was an IFB pastor holding tent revivals. His sermon touched on some pretty silly things, but claiming it is a sin to use a GPS because they are programmed with a woman's voice and a woman should never tell a man what to do took his sermon from charmingly goofy and quaint to fundy crazytown. Heaven forfend he might actually have to be the patient of a woman doctor or need real help from … [Read more...]

Trickle-Down Cults

by Samantha Fields cross posted from her blog Defeating The Dragons I grew up in a cult. ~~~~~~~~~~ That’s what I say when I have to start explaining my life to someone. As a phrase it carries a lot of baggage, but even so, it’s the easiest and most straightforward way I have to start my story. Generally I have to walk the person back from visions of Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt, but as loaded as the word “cult” is, it still applies to my life. According to the research of people like Michael Langone, the Independent Fundamental Baptist church I attended for a dozen years fit 13 out of 15 qualifiers. So while I didn’t live in a bunker or on a compound, there’s really no other way to explain w … [Read more...]

I Am A Publican And A Heathen Part 3

by Bruce Gerencser cross posted from his blog The Life and Times of Bruce GerencserIn March of 1994, our family packed everything up and moved from Somerset, Ohio to Elmendorf, Texas, a small rural spot along the road outside of San Antonio. Community Baptist Church had asked me to come to Texas to co-pastor the church along with Pat Horner, the founder of the church. This move was supposed to be what pastors like to call a once in a lifetime opportunity. The church was a young, growing Sovereign Grace church. (the church is much smaller today, and many of the members I pastored are no longer there) The church wanted me to jump-start their evangelistic efforts and help them start a … [Read more...]

I Am A Publican and a Heathen Part 2

by Bruce Gerencser cross posted from his blog The Life and Times of Bruce GerencserOur family arrived in Elmendorf, Texas the first week of March 1994. I had resigned from Somerset Baptist Church in Somerset, Ohio, and after closing down the church and Christian school, I  packed up my family and moved us to Elmendorf so I could become co-pastor of Community Baptist Church.Community Baptist Church was an Sovereign Grace (Calvinistic) Independent Baptist church. The church was started in the 1980’s by Pat Horner. The church worshiped at a ramshackle former Southern Baptist church building on Labus Road outside of Elmendorf. The church property included several acres of land that ho … [Read more...]

Part 1 – I am a Publican and a Heathen

by Bruce Gerencser cross posted from his blog The Life and Times of Bruce GerencserMoreover if thy brother shall trespass against thee, go and tell him his fault between thee and him alone: if he shall hear thee, thou hast gained thy brother. But if he will not hear thee, then take with thee one or two more, that in the mouth of two or three witnesses every word may be established. And if he shall neglect to hear them, tell it unto the church: but if he neglect to hear the church, let him be unto thee as an heathen man and a publican. (Matthew 18:15-17)Should church members be allowed to leave the church without permission? Bobby Jamieson, writing for 9Marks, answered the question … [Read more...]
