It’s All About Me, I Mean You, Jesus: Trolling For Jesus

by Bruce Gerencser cross posted from his blog The Life and Times of Bruce GerencserEditor's note: Decided to share this based upon the occasional Bible-spouting 'Come to Jesus' people that show up at NLQ and say similar things.  They don't understand they are proving exactly the point we are talking about in our recovery from spiritual abuse.Warning! Full bore Bruce Almighty snark ahead! … [Read more...]

Eight Years Later Part One

by Bruce Gerencser cross posted from his blog The Life and Times of Bruce GerencserOn the last Sunday of November 2008, my wife and I attended a Christian worship service for the last time. Over the months prior to this, Polly and I spent numerous hours talking about what we believed about God, Jesus, and the Bible. We also spent numerous hours talking about the vapid emptiness of churches and how they were little more than social clubs. Our leftward move politically — we had just voted for Barack Obama — caused us to see Christianity in a different light. While we certainly knew of a handful of churches that were committed to liberal and progressive ideals, these kind of churches were no … [Read more...]

Quoting Quiverfull: Common Sense For Once?

by Steven Anderson of Faithful Word Baptist Church - Balance in the Christian LifeEditor's note: They say even a stopped watch is right twice a day, and so it is with Steven Anderson. This is actually decent advice for a change. Balance in life is important. But I'm guessing he disapproves of any reading material that isn't the Bible or Biblical commentaries. … [Read more...]

I Did it All for Jesus: My Life of Self Denial

by Bruce Gerencser cross posted from his blog The Life and Times of Bruce GerencserI spent the first fifty years of my life in the Christian church. Baptized a Lutheran and later making a public profession of faith in a Baptist church at the age of fifteen, I had been a part of the Christian church most of my life. I preached my first sermon at the age of fifteen, attended an Independent Fundamentalist Baptist (IFB) college as a young man, and pastored churches for twenty-five years in Ohio, Texas, and Michigan. … [Read more...]

Part 1 – The Story

by Cindy Foster cross posted from her blog Finding Fundamental REASONSIn order to add some context to the articles I have written on this blog I want to designate a page to summarize our story from beginning to end.   It is my hope, as it has always been, to expose not only the wrongs that The Preacher was guilty of, but to own the actual wrongs we committed as opposed to what The Preacher has stated publicly using skilled innuendo and out-right public accusations. … [Read more...]

Quoting Quiverfull: Using First Names Disrespectful?

by Zsuzsanna Anderson from Are They All Yours? - Words Are PowerfulEditor's note: While I will agree it's a good idea to behave and speak respectfully to others I don't think you are really being disrespectful to your pastor if you know him very well and call him by his first name instead of adding the sobriquet of 'Pastor' or 'Reverend' or 'Father' in front of it. It all depends on the closeness of the relationship. It's not like like Steven Anderson has a legal titled name: for example Queen Elizabeth of England is always referred to as HRH or Ma'am when people must address the monarch. Zsu makes it sound like her husband has no real friends if they are that suspicious of someone being … [Read more...]

The Iglesia ni Cristo (Church of Christ) Indoctrinates Children to Obey Church Leaders

by Bruce Gerencser cross posted from his blog The Life and Times of Bruce GerencserWhat follows is a video put out by The Iglesia ni Cristo (Church of Christ), a “Christian religion whose primary purpose is to worship the Almighty God based on His teachings as taught by the Lord Jesus Christ and as recorded in the Bible. The Church of Christ is a church for every one who will heed the call of God and embrace its faith — regardless of his or her nationality, cultural background, social standing, economic status, and educational attainment.” (website) … [Read more...]

Purging My Taliban Ways

by Cindy Foster cross posted from her blog Finding FundamentalI was strolling down the aisles at Sam’s Wholesale Club one day about a year or so after leaving the church, and in the book aisle I noticed a book written by a woman from Afghanistan. It was obvious from the cover that she was a Muslim living under Taliban rule. I picked it up and began looking it over as I do with any book that piques my curiosity. I turned it over to read the back cover and was instantly captivated by what I saw. There written, was a list of rules imposed and strictly enforced on women under Taliban rule. … [Read more...]

How Should Churches Handle Allegations of Abuse?

by Bruce Gerencser cross posted from his blog The Life and Times of Bruce GerencserHow should churches handle allegations of abuse? Let me state right up front that I do not think churches shouldn’t “handle” anything.  This is what gets churches, pastors, and church leaders into trouble to start with. Instead of immediately doing the right thing when someone makes an allegation of abuse, pastors and church members often: … [Read more...]

Quoting Quiverfull: Your Entire Identity Is As A Mother?

by Steven L Anderson of Faithful Word Baptist Church - The Effects of Birth ControlEditor's note: So much ignorance and fear mongering in a few short paragraphs. That bit at the end about green plasma caused by birth control pills is especially ridiculous considering there are also other circumstances that cause green plasma - the coloration is completely harmless.  It's not 'poisoning' like Anderson claims. He doesn't seem to realize that not every woman is cut to be a stay at home mother. It does speak to the fear of everything outside the canon of fundamentalism that drives churches like the IFB. … [Read more...]
