Dear Carri ~ an open letter from one traumatized "mom of many" to another

by VyckieI was recently interviewed by a Minnesota news station in relation to the sad case of Carri Chmielewski ~ a "quiverfull" mother whose planned unassisted home birth of baby #9 ended tragically. As one who has been in similar high-risk situations with three of my pregnancies ~ I wrote a piece expressing my initial reaction (sickened and mortified) to the news that Carri's baby boy had died due to an amniotic fluid embolism (AFE) ~ a situation which might not have developed had she sought competent medical treatment earlier in her pregnancy when she first suspected she might be carrying twins.During the interview, I was asked, "What would you want to say to Carri?" OMG ~ I had … [Read more...]

Vyckie's Tour de Crap: They Shall Not Be Ashamed

Here's an article which I wrote shortly after a QF-ing friend had twins (I was so jealous) ~ this was published in Above Rubies and SALT magazines. I've added my comments at the end of the article ...THEY SHALL NOT BE ASHAMED by vyckie bennettIt sure seems to me that a high percentage of Quiver-minded families are blessed with twins (and triplets).Of course, the mere fact that we're having more pregnancies and many QF mothers are older (two of the "risk factors" for multiples) can partially account for this phenomenon - but I think there's more to the story.Could it be that God has a fantastic work in store and He's placing His arrows in the quivers of His sharpest marksmen? Mighty … [Read more...]

Dear Happy Full-quiver-er …

by VyckieFrequently in the comments section here at NLQ, we hear from women who are living the quiverfull/patriarchy lifestyle and are loving it ~ these women often feel that No Longer Quivering is portraying *all* QF/P families as oppressive and abusive ~ and understandably, they feel defensive about the perceived attack on their freely-chosen lifestyle.Early on, when we first started this blog, there was an exchange along these lines which I really have been wanting to highlight ~ and I'm finally getting around to digging these posts out of the comment section and bringing them front and center because I believe that the response from "Journey" deserves some serious … [Read more...]

Did I *really* trust Him?

by Vyckie I had lunch with Hazelle at school on her 13th birthday ~ this year was the first time that I didn't cry as I remembered the trauma of my 4th pregnancy and delivery ~ in fact, I hardly thought of it at all ~ so yeah, time does bring healing and I'm grateful for that. There's an interesting discussion going on over in the NLQ forums about quiverfull families who are "trusting the Lord" with their family planning and at the same time, accepting government assistance to support their children.themomma said: This is one of my biggest complaints against a quiver family I know.It is all "we are leaving it God" while they are using services. I think it is "selective faith" at … [Read more...]

We didn't want to be BALANCED

by VyckieMe & my boys ~ at a homeschooling conference ~ soaking up new ideas about how to live a godly lifestyle that would be pleasing to the Lord. Many NLQ readers have expressed their observation that in any healthy belief system or chosen lifestyle, there needs to be "balance" ~ a quick glance through the comment section will yield plenty of observations that we've gone from "one extreme to the other."Part of the reason I'm writing this blog is to hopefully help those who have never personally been steeped in the fundamentalist mindset get a glimpse inside the world and ~ more significantly ~ the head of one who's been there and done that. So ~ with that goal in mind, let me … [Read more...]

It's about a VISION

Vyckie's family 2007An important consideration that's obviously on everyone's mind here can be summed up this way: All those years that I published a "pro-life, pro-family" newspaper and I was writing articles for home school magazines encouraging others to live a QF/patriarchal lifestyle ~ we seemed to have a really nice, happy family. The Bennett Family was a role model for other Christian families ~ we were even honored by the governor of Nebraska in 2003 as "Family of the Year." I've shared many testimonies of God obviously working in our lives. (Be sure to click that link.) Now I've set up a blog and I'm writing a book saying this lifestyle ~ and the Christian worldview which … [Read more...]
