This is What Child Abusers Look Like in Homeschooling Communities

childabusers

by R. L. Stollar cross posted from Homeschoolers Anonymous We like to think that we know what child abusers look like. That we can pick them out of the crowd based on their creepy mustaches, darkly-tinted cargo vans, or their giant, thick-rimmed glasses. But those stereotypes are just that: stereotypes. And like all stereotypes, they fall tragically short. The fact is, child abusers are not Others. They do not walk around with signs that say, “Monster.” They are able to violate our trust — and children’s lives and bodies and minds — because we trust them. Which means they have our trust, because they are a part of our community. They are friends and family and teachers … [Read more...]

When Evangelicalism Makes Things Easy For Sexual Offenders – and Hard for Their Victims

baby washing her face

by Libby Anne cross posted from her blog Love, Joy Feminism Evangelical teachings on repentance and forgiveness create a tremendous problem when it comes to rape or other forms of abuse. If you commit a sin and repent of it, God forgives you. I remember hearing Psalm 103:12 quoted constantly: “As far as the east is from the west, so far has he removed our transgressions from us.” Of course, this was always said in a positive way—isn’t it awesome that God forgives us no matter what? But it doesn’t must mean God forgives us. It also means God forgives rapists, child molesters, and so on—fully and completely. I was taught that bringing up sins that someone had already … [Read more...]

News: Parents Hide Sexual Abuse of Girl For Ten Years

jacksonmugshots

It's ironic that Great Homeschool Conventions will not allow Ryan Stollar of HARO and Homeschoolers Anonymous to speak at their convention but they are likely to defend people like the Jackson family of Perquimans County, North Carolina. Better to protect even abusers than allow someone advocating for the rights of homeschool children. … [Read more...]

by Pastor Dean Samuel in Raw Story quoted from his documentary and from the site Vice.com - Arizona Pastor: Women in yoga pants are 'partially responsible' for rape During the protest, Saxton held a sign reading, “You Deserve Rape.” And he shouted at women to “give up your immodest clothing” and “yoga pants are sin.” … [Read more...]

My Abusive Relationship Was Typical

Samantha

by Samantha Field cross posted from her blog Defeating The Dragons Trigger warning for abuse and sexual violence Last week, I wrote an article for xoJane and I shared some things about my past that I haven’t shared on the internet before. I don’t enjoy talking about my abusive relationship at all, and I especially avoid thinking about my last semester at PCC, which was nightmarish with exceedingly few good memories. I was extremely vulnerable in that piece, knowing that there would be people around the internet that would shit on it. … [Read more...]

News: Bill Gothard’s Mea Culpa

gothard

A statement from Bill Gothard has gone up on his website in the last 24 hours in which he attempts to explain himself. I have withheld this statement in order to honor the request of the Board of Directors to wait until an initial review has taken place. As the review continues, I now want to make this statement. God has brought me to a place of greater brokenness than at any other time in my life. It is a grief to realize how my pride and insensitivity have affected so many people. I have asked the Lord to reveal the underlying causes and He is doing this. … [Read more...]

by Samantha Field cross posted from her blog Defeating The Dragons If you’ve never meandered around xoJane, well, now is your golden opportunity. I’ve been a loyal reader for almost a year now, and it’s a pretty cool place. So, when an xoJane editor reached out to me and asked if I’d be willing to tell a piece of my story for them, you can imagine that my reaction looked a bit like this: … [Read more...]

Why Highland Park Baptist Church Leaders Should Go To Jail

jeffrey-dale-eddie-600x336

by Bruce Gerencser cross posted from his blog The Way Forward Every day, there seems to be another story about a pastor, youth director, deacon, Sunday school teacher, or church leader committing a sexual crime. One common theme in these stories is that the church/church leaders often knew about the criminal behavior long before it was reported. (and often it is only reported when they are backed into a corner and forced to report it) … [Read more...]
