Let’s Out the Poisonous Ideas/Scriptures in the Quiverfull & Patriarchal Movements?

Burning-book-001

by Suzanne TitkemeyerGreetings! I am currently on the road, driving down in the deep south to see relatives and being exposed to a capacious amount of ridiculously bad ideas Fundamentalist Christianity has to offer. This morning I was telling Vyckie Garrison of driving through rural Mississippi, hitting search on my car radio and coming up with ten different Christian radio stations in a row. I was stuck listening to them for a few hours and was struck by some of the ideas put forward and flouted as 'The Truth' that are just dangerous to a person. … [Read more...]

When Church Hurts Part 6

whispering

by Ellen cross posted from her blog When Church HurtsThough we never had a meeting with Elliot or the leadership, I was again asked to teach a class and was also helping with a conference that our church was hosting in the spring.  When it came time for the conference, I had an opportunity to sit down with the speaker for a few minutes and, being a man of great discernment, he asked me some leading questions and I found myself telling him a bit of my story. … [Read more...]

When Church Hurts Part 4

blacksheep

by Ellen cross posted from her blog When Church HurtsDuring all of these years, I would come to church, sit four or five rows from the pulpit, right on the center aisle, and listen to Elliot and others preach grace, forgiveness, reconciliation, and restoration. Elliot preached and preached. I wept and wept openly. I could not sing. I could not so much as close my eyes in prayer. I could not stand for the blessing at the end of the service. I knew that no matter how much Elliot preached those words to everyone else in the congregation, they were not for me. And I would email him and tell him as much. Without response. … [Read more...]

When Church Hurts: Part 2

gossip

by Ellen cross posted from her blog When Church HurtsSpeaking out against wrongs being perpetrated in the church . . . that was my most egregious sin.  And because of it, I had lies told about me, people eavesdropped on my conversations, and I received hate mail from a group of people telling me that I was a terrible person. My only response was to continue talking occasionally to the lay leader of the church, Denise, and to send Elliot  my questions and thoughts in emails – often asking if we could meet to talk, but never getting a response. At one point (perhaps more than one but only one I know about), Elliot shared my emails with the consistory and they wrote a letter telling me th … [Read more...]

Kevin Swanson, Child Abuse, And Dead Little Bunnies

swanson

Reposted from Homeschoolers Anonymous HA note: Kathi is a Bible-belt midwest transplant to the beautiful Pacific northwest. After homeschooling her kids for 10 years (she decided that high school math and science were not her strongest subjects), both kids are in public school. She is a former church goer and finds herself in that unstudied demographic of middle-aged Nones. She has a B.A. in Urban Ministry and a M.S.W. Her goal is to work with children who have been abused or are in foster care. She loves to knit, cook and read (not in any particular order). The following was originally published on Kathi’s blog Moving Beyond Absolutes on April 5, 2014 and is reprinted with permission.  I h … [Read more...]

Quoting Quiverfull: Don’t Worry About Being Able to Afford Kids?

reluctant

by Anthony (husband of Adeye -No Greater Joy Mom) from his blog No Greater Joy Dad - Conversation With a Reluctant Husband RH:  But the source of stress isn’t always the kids.  It’s the finances that help pay for the kids.ANTHONY:  Aren’t you putting the cart before the horse?  If you are open to the Lord merely asking you to adopt, don’t you think He’ll take care of the finances?  If God asks us to do something, don’t you think He’ll pay for it?RH:  That sounds a bit pie-in-the-sky, doesn’t it?ANTHONY:  It does only if you are the god of your own finances.  In all that we do, we trust in the Lord, don’t we? Why is our financial future any different? … [Read more...]

Why I Haven’t “Given Up On The Church”

church

by Living Liminal from her blog Living LiminalThis morning, I read an article entitled Why You Shouldn’t Give up on the Church. The author is the son of a 'famous' christian. I am a 'nobody' in that particular world. He thinks "church is messy by nature." I have found it not messy, but dangerous. He says, "it’s where Jesus’ people are connected." I find I can connect with Jesus's people wherever I meet them.He opines that, "To leave the Church is to hurt yourself and to hurt others." I left because it was the only way to stop the hurt. His judgement: "leaving the Church... is escapism." My experience: leaving the institution was the only way to escape the abuse. … [Read more...]
