If you had told me that one day World magazine would ever mention Vyckie Garrison in a positive light after she left her Quiverfull lifestyle I would have busted out laughing and asked you if you were insane. Seriously? Never ever happening! … [Read more...]

Quoting Quiverfull: Chivalry is Important?

Brienne Maid of Tarth and Jaime Lannister - always squabbling over who holds the sword and stands in front of who.

by Jana, Jill, Jessa and Jinger Duggar from their book "Growing Up Duggar" From page 136 - 137: It warms our hearts when we're around young men, including our brothers, who are courteous and quick to practice the fine old art of gentlemanly chivalry. Some women these days think that allowing men to help them with anything makes them appear weak, and they refuse to take a man's hand to help them down a step or object to a man's offer to help them carry a heavy love. However, a gentleman's courtesy is not about women being weak or strong; it's about men needing to be men. Gentlemanly behavior is cultivated as they learn to serve others and treat ladies as ladies.  We encourage these e … [Read more...]

An Open Letter to Duggar Defenders

Michelle Duggar being awarded Vision Forum’s Mother of the Year with Beale and Doug Phillips

by Libby Anne cross posted from her blog Love, Joy FeminismMore than two years ago I wrote a blog post titled My Concerns about the Duggars. To this day it continues getting hundreds of hits daily, along with the random comment. Probably half of the comments left on it defend the Duggars as upright, responsible people raising healthy, well-adjusted young people. These comments often lash out against me, calling me bitter and so forth. I’ve often thought of responding to these comments with further blog posts, but so far I haven’t.Today that changes. This post consists of four parts, which deal with the Duggars’ subculture,  the argument that they are happy so nothing must be wrong, th … [Read more...]

Apparently Ben Seewald (he of the anti-Catholic rant and posing with assault rifles) popped the question last night to Jessa Duggar, just in time for the new season of the Duggar family's television show "19 Kids & Counting" How very convenient for them and their publicity machine. This is according to the E! Entertainment News website.Wonder if they'll ever find a beau for eldest daughter Jana? Quoting Quiverfull: Buy Used and Save the Difference?

thrift shop

by the Duggar girls, Jill, Jana, Jessa and Jinger Duggar in their book "Growing Up Duggar" page 17 Very interesting in light of the preparations for Jill's recent wedding.  And since our favorite shopping style is frugality, our favorite places to shop are thrift and consignment stores. If you shop there enough (and we go fairly often!) you can find great clothes at great prices. … [Read more...]

Quoting Quiverfull: Are These Stories Funny or Mean Spirited?

clown

from the Duggar girls book "Growing Up Duggar" pages 69 to 71. Yes, it's long but there is no way to share for discussion without putting this story up in its entirety. Would not make sense in a truncated form. Sharing Practical JokesNow, around our house there is a lot of fun and laughter throughout the day. Someone tells a funny joke or story, or plays a practical joke on someone, or someone does something that isn't meant to be funny, but turns out that way. We love having fun together as long as it doesn't get out of hand. … [Read more...]

Quoting Quiverfull: Bitter Rooms or Silencing Techniques?

gossip_busy_body

from Growing Up Duggar page 155 Harmful GossipOne other big issue we've witnessed in the social media world is that some people get hooked on reading gossip and then post their own slanderous statements about others, whom they sometimes don't even know. Or they post something they would never say to that person face-to-face. It comes across as though those posters have nothing better to do with their time. … [Read more...]

Quoting Quiverfull: The Four Points of Obedience For The Duggar Kids?

growing up duggar book cover

From page 44 of the book "Growing Up Duggar" in a section on why children being obedient in all things to the parents is important. Obedience must be:Instant. We answer with an immediate, prompt, "Yes ma'am!" or "Yes, sir!" as we set out to obey. (This response is important to let the authority know you heard what he or she asked you to do and that you are going to get it done as soon as possible.) Delayed obedience is really disobedience. Cheerful.  No grumbling or complaining. Instead, we respond with a cheerful "I'd be happy to!" Thorough. We do our best, complete the task as explained, and leave nothing out. No lazy shortcuts! Unconditional. No excuses,. No, 'That's not my … [Read more...]

Quoting Quiverfull: Porn and Romance Novels Create Idealized Lies?

growing up duggar book cover

by the Duggar girls from their book "Growing Up Duggar" page 111 and rather ironic considering Jill's recent marriage and Jessa's courtship with Ben Seewald "We have met some girls who have simply fallen in love with the idea of marriage and are just looking for a guy to fulfill their dreams.  They have an image in mind of what marriage is, and they are in love with that image. One girl told us recently, "I was in love with the thought of being in love, and it consumed my every waking hour." This is one of the greatest dangers of romance novels. They paint a picture of an unrealistic, unobtainable relationship. It's the same thing pornography does to men. Viewing pornography gives them a … [Read more...]
