The God Card: Thoughts from The Excellent Wife

Thoughts from The Excellent Wife The God Card ~ Thoughts on Patriarchal Teachings by Journey Someone in the church told me that I should have known it was abusive when my husband was controlling my life (the details of which are in the parts of my story that I have shared thus far here). It's like these people don't realize that the very books they recommend Christian wives to read are the very books that taught me that my husband was not abusive but was, rather, a godly man. For example, in the popular book, "The Excellent Wife," by Martha Peace (1999), a woman learns that, "Your husband is the one in charge. Being in charge does not mean he has to do everything. It does mean that he … [Read more...]

From the Library of Martyrdom ~ Part 2

How I was called to give up that which I did not have.. by Arietty In the years before the internet I relied on printed publications to nurture and sustain my life as a quiverfull homeschooling mom. It was within these publications that I found my own community in the Christian world, something which had eluded me before that. I read Family LIfe, Above Rubies, The Teaching Home,  Gentle Spirit and a variety of photocopied newsletters from families who had ministries of sending out newsletters. It was often frustrating to me that 3 weeks would go by with no new reading material in my mail box and then BOOM it would all arrive at once. I needed this Christian reading material. It was the … [Read more...]

Michelle Duggar is expecting her 19th child

by Vyckie Michelle Duggar with her children after the birth of baby #18 The news at People.com is that the Duggar family is joyously anticipating the arrival of their newest baby in the spring. "I love all of this, it is so fun," says Michelle. "Anna and I will have babies five months apart." According to the article, there are "no health concerns" for 42-year-old Michelle.  "Some women are made to have babies, and Michelle is to the nth degree," ob-gyn Amy Sarver told PEOPLE in December. "She is in terrific health without any strain on her uterus." So Michelle Duggar is "made to have babies" ~ huh? Of course, a seemingly logical question for those who are considering the quiverfull … [Read more...]

NLQ FAQ: What is Quiverfull?

by Vyckie   Q: What is "Quiverfull?" "Quiverfull" is a convenient, though I believe, somewhat unfortunate term which we're using at No Longer Quivering to describe a family lifestyle which is growing in popularity among evangelical Christians ~ particularly those who home educate their children. Quiverfull ~ is the idea that truly godly families will "trust the Lord" with their family planning. Children are viewed as unmitigated blessings ("As arrows in the hand of the mighty man, so are the children of ones youth, happy is the man who hath his quiver full of them") and as such, the couple is willing to have as many children as the Lord chooses to bless them with. Artificial or … [Read more...]

No-Win Scenario #1 ~ All the Responsibility, None of the Authority

by Vyckie As a convinced "Proverbs 31 woman" ~ dedicated to serving the Lord by honoring, supporting, and even "serving" my husband ~ I always understood that according to the biblical teachings of patriarchy, it is actually the husband who assumes ultimate responsibility for his household. (One day, Warren would be standing before the Lord to give an account for his success or failure in leading the family in accordance with God's revealed Word). So ~ I believed that while I had only the temporal burden of submitting to my husband's (often incompetent and wrong-headed) leadership in this life ~ it was Warren who actually bore the weight of responsibility in Eternity ~ where it really … [Read more...]

It's about a VISION

Vyckie's family 2007 An important consideration that's obviously on everyone's mind here can be summed up this way: All those years that I published a "pro-life, pro-family" newspaper and I was writing articles for home school magazines encouraging others to live a QF/patriarchal lifestyle ~ we seemed to have a really nice, happy family. The Bennett Family was a role model for other Christian families ~ we were even honored by the governor of Nebraska in 2003 as "Family of the Year." I've shared many testimonies of God obviously working in our lives. (Be sure to click that link.) Now I've set up a blog and I'm writing a book saying this lifestyle ~ and the Christian worldview which … [Read more...]
