Planet Mommywood Replies to Vyckie Garrison

Here, have a Sky Goat. Makes as much sense as the Planet Mommywood ladies. Image by Suzanne Titkemeyer

by Suzanne TitkemeyerThis morning one of our readers emailed me a link to a duo I've quoted here a couple of times in our Quoting Quiverfull feature and that Vyckie Garrison mentioned rather kindly and stated nothing derogatory about in one of her postings--- Quiverific!. The Planet Mommywood (is this a play on names ala Planet Hollywood and its over priced burgers? Confusing?) ladies, Jenn and Kristen, did a video in reply to Vyckie's article. … [Read more...]

NLQ Question of the Week: Why is ‘Home Birth’ so Promoted as the Godly Way?

Questionoftheweek

This is a new series we have started running on Thursdays. Examining some of the questions involving long held Quiverfull theology and life. One thing we've seen here at NLQ in both the stories told by some of our writers and in the words of cultural enforcers of Quiverfull such as Debi Pearl and Nancy Campbell is a dislike or disdain for giving birth in the hospital. Even when there are tragic circumstances that might have been prevented with prior prenatal care with a licensed physician and at a health care facility --- like what happened with Carri Chmielewski. … [Read more...]

Waking Up To Hidden Abuse In The Christian Faith

Image from Vyckie Garrison used with permission

by AJ cross posted from her blog I Am Phoenix A year and six months ago, I officially chose to no longer identify as a Christian. It was the summer of 2012. Since then, many well meaning people have goaded me, guilted me, and mistakenly told me I was confusing all of Christianity for the abusive religious cult I grew up in. They told me it was ok to reject the cult I grew up in, but that I shouldn't reject all of Christianity as well.Well, guess what. I reject it all.  I reject the teachings of the abusive, patriarchal Christian cult I grew up in. And I reject mainstream, evangelical Christianity today. In my opinion, it is imbued with toxic, demeaning beliefs. I wrote about this to … [Read more...]

Tim Bayly Is Tardy To Our Hen Party!

men-of-quality-women-rights

by Suzanne TitkemeyerEvangelical pastor/blogger Tim Bayly just discovered Vyckie Garrison's life story and *gasp* is busy clutching his pastoral pearls as he realizes that women are speaking out! Guessing sometimes information outside of the CPM bubble takes a while to trickle down past all those filters woven from old Bible pages.Women folks! They are speaking out 'online' and even worse, 'in real life', to the men folks! He can't understand how Vyckie could possibly have such a problem with God the Father and Christianity in general even after reading all the ways in which her own beliefs harmed her. It must be feminism according to him and his readers/commenters.He had this to … [Read more...]

Laughter is Good Medicine: How Playing Good Christian Housewife Almost Killed Me Debunked!

authorityandpower

They used to say in music that when Weird Al parodied your song you'd officially 'made' it. I guess the same might be true in Christianity when Landover Baptist (a parody site) turns their gaze to you. This week Landover pubished two very humorous takes on Vyckie's speech "The Good Patriarch" Posting both below. The first was on the front page of Landover earlier in the week before going to the archives in the forums. … [Read more...]

Vyckie Garrison – How Playing Good Christian Wife Almost Killed Me

vyckie

Today on Alternet NLQ's own Vyckie Garrison's story was published. Taken largely from her talk at the American Atheist Convention in Salt Lake City it's a fascinating read.Alternet - How Playing Good Christian Housewife Almost Killed MeThanks M. Dolon Hickmon for the excellent graphics that accompany this piece. Vyckie Garrison was once a minor celebrity in the Quiverfull Movement, made famous by TV’s Duggar family. As a devout, Bible-believing Christian and the mother of seven homeschooled children, Garrison spent 16 years, with her husband, publishing a newspaper for families on a similar path. Today, via a website called No Longer Quivering, she publishes resources for women leavi … [Read more...]
