How should we pray against ISIS? April 25, 2015

Peter Leithart is one of our wisest theologians.  At First Things Online he advises on how how to pray for such bloodthirsty enemies of God as ISIS (I would add Boko Haram, Al Quaeda,  North Korea’s government, and the Iranian government).

Basically, he says we can pray as the imprecatory psalms pray.  They pray for God to rain judgment on his enemies.

Now we are to love our enemies.  But Paul also tell us to “hate what is evil.”  These powers are undoubtedly evil, because they kill the innocent, and with great glee.

So it is Christian, and not without love, to pray that God would destroy the powers that are against love and all that is good.  “Destroy them, O Lord!  Save your church!”

As David prays in Ps 17: “Rise up, O Lord, confront them, bring them down.”
