Never say never

Never say never May 5, 2015

A funny thing happened on my way to retirement.

I was planning on bowing out of full-time teaching in two and a half years.

But then my prescient wife told me she thought we would move soon.

I said, “Jean, you’re crazy!  No one wants me.  And I am 62!”

The very next day I got an email from Lyle Dorsett asking me if I would allow him to enter my name in the running for the Anglican Chair of Divinity at Beeson Divinity School.

Long story short, we are moving to Birmingham, AL, this summer.

It is my dream job.  They wanted someone who does history and theology from an Anglican perspective, and train pastors at this interdenominational seminary.  They also wanted an Edwards specialist, and are pleased I do theology of religions.

I will miss my colleagues at Roanoke College, where I have labored for 26 years.  Jean and I will find it hard to part from  our friends at St John Lutheran Church, where I have had ten very happy years of ministry as Teaching Pastor.  I will say goodbye to the best pastor I have ever seen, Mark Graham.

I guess the lesson is . . . never say never.
