February link round-up

This month has flown by and I'm way behind in compiling the February link round-up. Here it is at last! Some posts on other blogs:"My son’s father is Christian and wanted him baptized. While I did not participate in the ceremony, I did permit it."  Read more... "This was the first book I ever read that explicitly acknowledged menstruation, childbirth, and abortion. I loved its rich setting, its magic, and its exploration of power." Read more.. "I want to say THANK YOU to my readers an … [Read more...]

Creating a Birth Altar, Part 1

Inspired by birth altars created by artist Amy Swagman of The Mandala Journey, I decided I wanted to make a special birth altar for the birth of my daughter. My mom bought me a small, unfinished curio cabinet/shadow box to use for this purpose. The first thing I did was to paint it “placenta red” using a blend of red and purple paints to get the shade I wanted. This is my favorite “power” color.I had a variety of postcards, tags, and inspirational words saved and some of them posted on th … [Read more...]

Placenta Magic

Belly cast from second pregnancy. photo courtesy of the author

...And when you see this wondrous thing That grew me up so well, Say thank you to the Goddess Who made us from one cell...*--Dr. Sarah Buckley, "Ode to My Placenta" I've said for many years now that my favorite color is "placenta red." A deep, rich, life-saturated red. I'm amazed by the placenta. How cool is it that we can grow a whole new organ and then just release it from our bodies when it is no longer needed? Pretty cool. I think the reason the placenta might not get as much … [Read more...]

Wednesday Wisdom: Inhale

Green Lungs by SFeraSF http://fav.me/d2bjzbz

A weekly Wednesday Wisdom post with two or three profound or beautiful thoughts on a theme related to Paganism and childbearing. An invitation to meditate or just to pause a moment and consider.Breath, pause, inhalation, exhalation, birth... "Remember your breath and how the great pause leads once again to movement. Inhale. Pause. Now exhale. The power To Keep Silence has renewed you, and will continue to open you to the greater Mystery." -T. Thorn Coyle, Make Magic of Your Life"A woman … [Read more...]

Pagan families takes the next step

256px-Learning_to_walk_by_pushing_wheeled_toy

I've been letting this ship drift a bit, as the managing editor here, seeing what happens if I stop saying, "No, that doesn't quite fit the scope of Pagan Families." And it's been pretty great.I started Pagan Families because I wanted to assemble Pagan childbearing resources in one place. I still want that and Pagan Families is going to keep that core of content. It's something few people are writing about and something lots of us need, unlike Pagan parenting, about which there are lots of … [Read more...]

Hold to the vision…

"To dance is to reach for a world that doesn't exist, To sing the heartsong of a thousand generations, To feel the meaning of a moment in time." - Beth Jones "I am only one, but I am one.  I cannot do everything, but I can do something.  And I will not let what I cannot do interfere with what I can do."  ~Edward Everett Hale After writing about human trafficking for the Patheos book club and then reading a truly horrifying article about incredible, unimaginable violence and brutality ag … [Read more...]

The magic of making a life

I recently wrote about being a householder and homemaker, but in that post I didn't write about how amazing a spiritual journey pregnancy and childbirth are. I wrote my previous post from where I'm standing currently: parent to a nearly 5 yr old and a freshly 2 yr old. Yet, I learned so much from growing, birthing, and sustaining a new life.* Madonna lactans, Jean Fouquet I found my naturally heady and airy self more grounded and physically present in my body while pregnant. I struggled with … [Read more...]
