“Strengthen our hearts for love and just action.”

This morning’s Showing Up For Racial Justice (SURJ) phone call for faith leaders against the current rash of burning of Black churches began with these words said in prayer.

Strengthen our hearts for love and just action, because we need strength to look squarely at the fact that Black churches are being burned.

Strengthen our hearts for love and just action, because white people have an important role to play in the struggle for safety and justice in Black churches and communities.

Strengthen our hearts for love and just action, because in a multi-faith world Pagans cannot sit silently and allow these sacred community gathering places to burn.

So what actions can white Pagans take? Here are some ideas that were discussed on the SURJ call, that local Pagans — individuals, families, and communities — could enact:

  • share news and information about what is happening
  • fly a Black Lives Matter banner
  • hold a silent vigil
  • keep a list of white folks who are ready to respond to Black leaders’ calls
  • donate to the fund to rebuild the churches

By all that we hold sacred, may our hearts be strengthened for love and just action. What action will you commit to today?
