Breastfeeding and Parenting as Spiritual Practices

February 2014 003

Every single human being was drummed into this world by a woman, having listened to the heart rhythms of their mother. ––Connie Sauer When I became a mother, many things in my life changed. I was startled and dismayed by the magnitude in which my free time diminished and one by one many of my leisure pursuits and hobbies were discarded. The time for one of my favorite hobbies increased exponentially, however: reading. As a child I was a voracious reader—my mother had to set a … [Read more...]

Family Full Moon Calamandala

In association with my family monthly tradition of family full moon fun, each year I also draw a full moon "calamandala." Calamandala is a word I believe I coined that refers to a calendar in mandala form. I am not particularly skilled in drawing, but have found that the color combination of white colored pencils on black paper produces a striking result with limited skill! In 2012, along with the dates of each full moon and goddesses representing the elements, seasons, and new/waning moons, I … [Read more...]

Brigid’s Grove

January 2014 165

Today my family is celebrating Imbolc or Brigid's Day and my kids are so excited! Corned beef and cabbage is in the crockpot, pound cake and homemade custard are both cooling to make a "Fire and Snow" trifle for dessert tonight. My husband is currently making meringue cookies (had egg whites leftover from the custard!). We already made and ate oatcakes for breakfast and a braided "Bride's Loaf" is on the agenda to go with dinner. Last night my toddler daughter and I left out a mantle for Brigid … [Read more...]

Birth as Initiation

“Childbirth is a rite of passage so intense physically, psychologically, emotionally, spiritually, that most other events in a woman’s life pale next to it. In our modern lives, there are few remaining rituals of initiation, few events that challenge a person’s mettle down to the very core. Childbirth remains a primary initiatory rite for a woman.” –from the book MotherMysteries via Thesis Tidbits: Birth as a Shamanic Experience | Talk Birth. I just finished reading a short book … [Read more...]

Birth Mystery

January 2014 120

“Women’s mysteries, the blood mysteries of the body, are not the same as the physical realities of menstruation, lactation, pregnancy, and menopause; for physiology to become mystery, a mystical affiliation must be made between a woman and the archetypal feminine. A woman must sense, know or imagine herself as Woman, as Goddess, as an embodiment of the feminine principle…Under patriarchy this connection has been suppressed; there are no words or rituals that celebrate the connection … [Read more...]

Family Full Moon Ritual

November 2013 069

Two years ago, in conjunction with one of my classes at Ocean Seminary College, I realized that it was high time for me to try to offer spiritual nourishment and experiences to my immediate family members throughout the year. I want to be the priestess of my own hearth first. And it was at this time, my idea for Family Full Moon Fun was born and we've kept it up, with varying degrees of success, ever since. I usually envision a delightful family ritual with loving connection, meaningful … [Read more...]
