Sacred Body  Sacred Space Sacred Womb Holding enfolding protecting nourishing. Spinning cells into soul into body into breath into life. Unfurling without conscious control or effort. Dancing together in the incredible might of creation... I missed my chance to officially participate in our first Pagan Families Flashpoints series on the topic of what makes a family, but I still have something to say about the topic anyway! For me, the question of what makes a … [Read more...]

Plant a Tree

I live in Nebraska, the home of Arbor Day, and so we hear about it a lot!  Ours is coming up this Friday, but the date varies by state - you can find out yours here.  Growing up, my grandmother and I would plant a tree on her land every year around this time.  There's something amazing about watching a tree grow taller and taller each year; after planting it, watering it, and caring for it carefully.  These days I don't have the land to plant one tree a year, but I still feel it's important … [Read more...]

In our modern lives, there are few remaining rituals of initiation, few events that challenge a person’s mettle down to the very core. Childbirth remains a primary initiatory rite for a woman.” –from the book MotherMysteries via Thesis Tidbits: Birth as a Shamanic Experience | Talk Birth. Birth Warrior?

img_0273

After the birth of my daughter in 2011, I received a small package from a Birthing from Within mentor friend. In it was a sweet little t-shirt imprinted with the words, My Mama is a Birth Warrior. The words on the shirt surrounded a labyrinth image, which I love as a metaphor for birth and life.  Written on the enclosed card was the following: Imagine a tribe in which a woman is prepared for childbirth in the same way warriors are prepared for battle. Imagine a Ceremony for this … [Read more...]

Birth Song, Life Song, Death Song

July 2013 035

"A woman can spin a primal umbilical rope within her womb through which she passes life-energy to the future." --Melissa Raphael "In some indigenous cultures of the Americas there is the practice of finding one's death song while alive. This song becomes the ally of the person throughout their lives, so that they become very acquainted with what the song means in their lifetime. Death then, is a companion of life, and is never forgotten. In the hour of death, these people would, if they were … [Read more...]

Small Adventures

Goddess of green spaces and deep places cleanse my soul. Anoint my spirit with peace and remind me to let go. Remind me of the power of appreciating that which I have. May I inhale and exhale with release and freedom. The spirit of adventure runs through my veins with the rich color of crushed raspberry May it always run so free may it be blessed and may I be reminded of the courage and love shown in small, wild adventures. Wild black raspberries are ripe at my … [Read more...]
