Midwives Make a Difference

NMW2013_BustMyth

Not only is this International Babywearing Week, it's also National Midwifery Week! Both of these weeks of education and celebration are something Pagans can get behind. We don't have a whole lot of social scientific data about what Pagans want, choose, or experience in birthing, but we do know that they favor midwifery care. According to Kimberly Hedrick's Pagan Health Survey, "The majority of Pagans would opt for natural childbirth attended by a midwife, with less than 20% saying they would … [Read more...]

August link round-up: home birth, cesarean birth, body image after birth and more…

Birth Art Goddess Sculptures From Talk Birth http://www.etsy.com/shop/talkbirth

I love putting together these monthly link round-ups because I get to revisit my favorite articles and websites from the previous month. In August we celebrated World Breastfeeding Week (Aug 1-7) and we observed "the Day of Hope and Healing, a national remembrance day for families who have experienced miscarriage, stillbirth, infant or child loss." Then we read articles about home birth, cesarean birth, body image, raising Pagan children, rites of passage, and more:From Witch Mom - Teaching … [Read more...]

Birth Warrior?

img_0273

After the birth of my daughter in 2011, I received a small package from a Birthing from Within mentor friend. In it was a sweet little t-shirt imprinted with the words, My Mama is a Birth Warrior. The words on the shirt surrounded a labyrinth image, which I love as a metaphor for birth and life. Written on the enclosed card was the following: Imagine a tribe in which a woman is prepared for childbirth in the same way warriors are prepared for battle. Imagine a Ceremony for this woman b … [Read more...]

Book Birthday: And the winner is…

Labyrinth Earrings from Wild Mother Arts

I'm so grateful to everybody who's helped me celebrate my book's first birthday this week!I hear regularly from people who wish they'd found Birth On The Labyrinth Path or the Pagan Families blog or the Pagan Families Facebook page earlier in their pregnancies. I wish for many fewer instances of Pagans who are welcoming new babies and feeling as though they have no spiritually appropriate resources, and indeed many more instances of having to choose amongst abundant resources. When you tell … [Read more...]

Book birthday party: of life and labyrinths

Trip 2013 548

In 2005, my mother and I attended a Speaking of Women's Health conference event in Columbia, Missouri. While there, we attended a session on labyrinths. I had only briefly heard of labyrinths before this time and they were new to my mom, but we were both instantly captivated by the symbol, metaphor, and process and have remained so ever since. The speaker shared that there was a labyrinth on the grounds of Boone Hospital, designed for patients to walk and also open for community use. My mom and … [Read more...]

Wednesday Wisdom, book birthday party edition: Labyrinths

Birth On The Labyrinth Path

This week's Wednesday Wisdom post is also part of the Birth On The Labyrinth Path birthday party week. The theme is labyrinths. How can labyrinths connect us to spirit, to the land, or to our own bodies? How can the labyrinth be a symbol for birth? "To walk a sacred path is to discover our inner sacred space: that core of feeling that is waiting to have life breathed back into it through symbols, archetypal forms like the labyrinth, rituals, stories and myths." - Lauren Artress, Walking A … [Read more...]
