Spell for Family Balance

February 2014 046

For a number of years we've had a family mantra: our family works in harmony to meet each member's needs. At times, I've felt like I'm repeating it through clenched teeth. At times, I have felt that none of our needs are being met well and at times I've felt like harmony is a distant, unattainable treasure. However, we keep using it and sometimes, sometimes it feels like we're there. I do not subscribe to the ideal of the self-sacrificing parent. I refuse to repeat the cliche that "everyone has … [Read more...]

natural mama circle

First some blog business, then the link round-up: Since I haven't been able to track down the original winner of the free seat in Wild Mother Arts' new Natural Mama Circle, I narrowed the pool down to those people who followed the instructions and actually left an email address, generated a random number, and the new winner is: Sarah Hodgkins! I hope you enjoy the Circle, Sarah (check your email for details).  In December we welcomed A Witch's Ashram to Patheos Pagan!  We continue … [Read more...]

Manifest Divinity: A Review

book_manifestdivinitysmall

Manifest Divinity, by Lisa Spiral Besnett, is a short book that encourages us to open up to manifestations of the divine in our lives. It is a simply written and incredibly positive book. Besnett uses a variety of techniques to tap into the divine in the world, providing contexts and some recommendations and discussion (or journaling) questions for each style. I wanted to love this book, as I like the ideas Besnett presents and the categories she's developed. I think this book would be ideal … [Read more...]

Group Ritual to Acknowledge Miscarriage

mizuko4

This ritual is designed as a ceremony of healing and empowerment following miscarriage. It is based on a ritual that I had following my own miscarriages in 2010. Anyone who has experienced miscarriage and who would like to acknowledge the impact on her life is welcome. So too are those who would like to act as witnesses and keepers of sacred space for those who grieve. The simple altar is laid outdoors on the ground near an already dug hole (for planting a tree). It contains a small bowl, a … [Read more...]

Wednesday Wisdom: Faith

"We're people who have enough faith in the future and enough stability in the present to bring children into the spiral of life or nurture children who are not born to us." -- Starhawk, Diane Baker, & Anne Hill, Circle Round: Raising Children in Goddess Traditions "Part of what gives me continued faith in a body I doubted for so long is the milk that comes whenever it is needed." -- Francesca Lia Block, Guarding The Moon: A Mother's First Year   (I'm trying something new … [Read more...]

Maidens in stone

By Kris Bradley Editor's Note: This is re-posted with the author's permission from Confessions of a Pagan Soccer Mom.  Photo credit: Hecate via Rob Koopman. I’ve participated in a couple of discussions in the last month or so on the subject of the typical Triple  Goddess: Maiden, Mother and Crone  The Maiden is virginal.  She is the waxing moon; the early spring, not quite yet burst into bloom; she is  new beginnings.  She is a seeker of knowledge. The Mother is sexual  She is … [Read more...]

Review: Circle Round

circle-round

The day before Samhain, Diane Baker stood in her kitchen thinking about needing to plan a celebration for her family and wondered, "Why isn't there just a book I could open?"  So she collaborated with Anne Hill and Starhawk to write the book she wanted to read, Circle Round: Raising Children in Goddess Traditions. Circle Round offers resources divided into four sections: *Part One: Welcome to the Circle introduces the book and the practice of Goddess traditions with children. *Part … [Read more...]
