Review: Divorcing a Real Witch: For Pagans and the People That Used to Love Them by Diane RajchelThis is a book I asked to review not because I have been through the pain and process of divorce myself, but because it offers another perspective in the raft of pagan lifestyle books that are currently appearing. I have to admit though that as the child of divorced parents, and as an author interested in the lives of children, I didn’t come to this title without investment and interest. It is s … [Read more...]

Picture Books for Pagan Families: Summer Solstice

summer sun risin

By Meg YardleyThe Summer Solstice celebrates the longest day (and shortest night) of the year, the height of the sun’s power, the abundant energy and magic all around us, and our own sense of achievement and empowerment.  You and your family might want to watch the sun set for the shortest night; host a costume party that celebrates magical transformation; make sun symbol art; drink sun tea; or write down something you want to transform and burn it in a small fire.  This year I especially wan … [Read more...]

Pagan Families Flash Points: Let’s Talk About Sex

Last month we launched our new round robin series: Pagan Families Flash Points. We don't want to host a debate exactly, because the last thing we want to do is fan the flames of any mommy wars, but we are hoping to generate some useful friction around our different parenting philosophies and practices, to shed light on topics that are very dear to us and that we do get fired up about. Each month we'll share a topic that we'd love to see lively discussion on. Our regular contributors will … [Read more...]

Flash points: a family that’s open and inclusive

20140429-095327

By ChristinaI live in a big house with my husband and our two kids, my husband's girlfriend, her husband, their cats and dog, and a friend of ours.  That's family--or at least a big part of it.  Our housemates are the people who steal our baby when they go for a walk, and if the fish sauce is missing from the fridge, then they probably have that, too. Every week we split our farm share, and I don't think we could handle the whole thing on our own.  My husband and his girlfriend carpool home f … [Read more...]

Ask Us: What symbol can I use to protect my home?

House protection symbols 2, Mrs. B

Have you noticed we have an "Ask Us" button near the top of our main page? Got a question about Paganism and pregnancy or family life that you don’t see answered here yet?  We’d like to try to answer your question.  No question is too big or too small. If we don’t know the answer, we’ll look for someone who does (we know lots of parents, priest/esses, and birth professionals).  Your question and our answer may appear as a blog post so others can benefit from you asking.Well, we got a question … [Read more...]

What Makes a Family – Branches and Roots

Photo by Larissa Holland used under a creative commons license

This month, Pagan Families is hosting a discussion on "what makes a family?", exploring the many different approaches to parenting and family in our community.  I have always loved the metaphor of the family tree.  I was raised with a strong sense of family; not just our own immediate circle, but great-aunts and uncles and cousins twice removed, playing with children whose last names branched out from ours three or four generations ago.  When I was in elementary school, a great aunt and uncle of … [Read more...]

The Pagan Families contributors have often talked about wanting a way to explore together our diverse approaches to important Pagan Families topics. We don't want to host a debate exactly, because the last thing we want to do is fan the flames of any mommy wars, but we are hoping to generate some useful friction around our different parenting philosophies and practices, to shed light on topics that are very dear to us and that we do get fired up about. So today we're excited to begin hosting … [Read more...]
