A weekly Wednesday Wisdom post with two or three profound or beautiful thoughts on a theme related to Paganism and childbearing. An invitation to meditate or just to pause a moment and consider. The magic of making a life

I recently wrote about being a householder and homemaker, but in that post I didn't write about how amazing a spiritual journey pregnancy and childbirth are. I wrote my previous post from where I'm standing currently: parent to a nearly 5 yr old and a freshly 2 yr old. Yet, I learned so much from growing, birthing, and sustaining a new life.* Madonna lactans, Jean Fouquet I found my naturally heady and airy self more grounded and physically present in my body while pregnant. I struggled with … [Read more...]

Review: The Mother’s Wisdom Deck

bfly_interactivecard_600

I immediately resonated with the beauty of online images from the Mother's Wisdom Deck created by Niki Dewart, Elizabeth Marglin, and Jenny Kostecki-Shaw, so I was thrilled when I wrote to ask for a review copy and they mailed one to me right away.My kids participated in opening the deck and the preschooler immediately spread the cards out across our rug - a great way to begin to interact with a new deck. The four suits of this deck are a bit unusual: Natural Mother, Animal Mother, A … [Read more...]

On Being a Holy Mother

‘Holy Mother,In whom we live, move and have our being,From you all things emerge and unto you all things return…’ This is the beginning of a prayer I learned from T Thorn Coyle just before becoming pregnant with my first child. It is only a slight twist on a biblical verse Acts 17:28 with which I was already familiar. As a religious studies scholar, whose work focused on women in religion and Mariology (the study of the Virgin Mary) theories of the divine feminine were important to m … [Read more...]
