Beltane Flowers for our Neighbors

It's April 1st, and that means that Beltane is only a month away - as one of the biggest holidays in the Pagan community, I know a lot of us are already starting to prepare!  I have such fond memories of May Day growing up, and the traditions associated with it have always lent their charm to my conception of Beltane.  We would craft little baskets, usually filled with candy or other little treats, and leave them on neighbors' doorsteps early in the morning.  At school we usually did the same, an … [Read more...]

Kids Can Charm the Plow

shutterstock_225602821

For many Heathens, this time of year marks the celebration of the Charming of the Plow, a ritual to honor the earth and encourage growth and fertility in the coming seasons.  The concept is very simple: giving offerings to the earth as you begin to stir up the soil for the first time that year.  I wrote a simple song to the tune of 'Twinkle Twinkle Little Star', and my children and I will sing it this year as we give to the earth and prepare our first seeds for planting. Soil, soil, running d … [Read more...]

Children and Public Paganism

I am very active in my local Pagan community - I'm a member of a few groups, regularly attend a few more, and host the occasional public ritual at my home.  My sort-of dirty secret is that I don't do these things for me, not completely; and I don't do them to completely selflessly build community.  Honestly, I was pretty satisfied with my personal daily practice, and didn't feel a need for much else.  One of the huge reasons I'm so involved with public Paganism is children. It didn't quite oc … [Read more...]

Rain Rain (Don’t!) Go Away

One of my children's favorite things to do is play in the rain.  Regardless of the weather, when they hear the telltale drips they're on their feet and out the door within minutes, ready to frolic.  Of course, they inevitably come back about ten minutes later, soaked through and freezing and begging for towels; but there's nowhere in the world they'd rather be in that moment. This week has been incredibly wet for my part of the midwest, and I couldn't be more thankful - it … [Read more...]

Plant a Tree

I live in Nebraska, the home of Arbor Day, and so we hear about it a lot!  Ours is coming up this Friday, but the date varies by state - you can find out yours here.  Growing up, my grandmother and I would plant a tree on her land every year around this time.  There's something amazing about watching a tree grow taller and taller each year; after planting it, watering it, and caring for it carefully.  These days I don't have the land to plant one tree a year, but I still feel it's important to no … [Read more...]

Top 10 Posts of 2013

photo courtesy of Wild Mother Arts

This is an entirely unsystematic, unscientific, personally biased list of my top 10 favorite Pagan Families posts from 2013. It's obviously not all the good posts, or even all the great posts. It's not necessarily the most read or shared or commented on posts either. But I tried to include posts from all our regular (and irregular) contributors, and to represent the range of topics we now cover. From pregnancy to postpartum, from sex education to adoption, from spiritual practice with toddlers … [Read more...]

Manifest Divinity: A Review

book_manifestdivinitysmall

Manifest Divinity, by Lisa Spiral Besnett, is a short book that encourages us to open up to manifestations of the divine in our lives. It is a simply written and incredibly positive book. Besnett uses a variety of techniques to tap into the divine in the world, providing contexts and some recommendations and discussion (or journaling) questions for each style.I wanted to love this book, as I like the ideas Besnett presents and the categories she's developed. I think this book would be ideal … [Read more...]
