Annual Spirit Babies Ceremony + Pantheacon

Our Spirit Babies

I've received word that this year's Spirit Babies ceremony will take place on Sunday 12/15 in Berkeley, California, from 12-2pm. It's an interfaith service for those who've been touched by abortion, miscarriage, or stillbirth. The organizers say on their Facebook page: Up till now, there has been little like this in the US. Women experiencing these losses have mostly been alone and isolated. There is a stigma around pregnancy loss, no matter what the cause, and little opportunity to share s … [Read more...]

How the Spirit Babies Interfaith Ceremony came to be

Candle Lotus

By SilverwingMany years ago, a friend told me about the Mizuko Jizo, a Japanese deity that watches over the spirits of those who were miscarried, aborted or stillborn.  There are temples with gardens of hundreds of these jizo statues.  There is a place in Japanese society for women to grieve openly about their pregnancy losses.  There are ceremonies in Japanese temples for this, called Mizuko Kuyo.  The spirits of the unborn are called ‘mizuko’ or ‘water babies’ and they may come back again s … [Read more...]
