Mother Carry Me Down to the Sea

Everyone has moments when they find it difficult to see themselves as beautiful either on the inside or out. It's even harder at times for people with disabilities and especially disfigurements. For me, I had trouble accepting my inner and outer beauty because of abuse. When I was about to enter kindergarten, my father said I wouldn't have any friends because I was fat. I took it to heart and cried most of the first day. Sometimes he would get angry and say I looked like shit. Because of of my … [Read more...]

Walk in the Snow

The deep snow has finally come to my small town. I watched it dance and turn the world white while I was safe in my snug pajamas eating pancakes. I could have rushed through my food with the mantra "that was stupid not to put the car in the garage" repeating over and over. Things like that happen to people with depression. This time as the thought of the car getting damaged came up I let it flow by. As the though of other people thinking how silly my husband and I were for not putting the car … [Read more...]

Shocked By a Milestone

A month and a half ago I began praying daily at my altar. The ritual was put into place to help me feel more connected to my spirituality since there isn't a Pagan community in my town. I would fix my hair a bit and light a candle then stand and do breath and energy work.Over the past couple of weeks I've had muscle jerks and mild hallucinations. By mild I mean I knew what I saw wasn't real. And what I did see didn't last long. See through hands might emerge from my abdomen or I would see a … [Read more...]

High Octane Healing

Once in a while I'll write down all the little things that go flying through my mind. A few seconds of a whirlwind of thoughts and images ends up becoming a page or more of notes that take much longer to write. I was reviewing one of these subconscious sessions from a couple of years ago and came across "motorhead elephants offering high octane healing". I immediately got an image of Ganesha decked out in colorful tie-dye and black leather. He slides to a halt spraying gravel looking cool. The … [Read more...]

US Supreme Court Gets Pagan Organizations off the ADA Hook But That Shouldn’t Be An Excuse

US Supreme Court unanimously agrees that religious organisations don't have to comply with ADA employment regulations. (New York Times)On one hand I'm for the division of church and state. On the other the ADA is a very important piece of legislation to protect disabled citizens from discrimination. Being a diverse and inclusive community will continue to be in the hands of Pagan participant, Pagan organisations and their employees without the enforcement of US law. Of course are … [Read more...]

New Zealand: Healthcare in Other Nations

In the post “Circle Round”, I asked other practitioners with disabilities to join me in learning about different types of socioeconomic systems and how they have been implemented in other nations. Currently in many nations around the world, people are gathering in occupations and protests over these issues. I would like these series of posts to be our opportunity to think about important aspects of society which include: trade, knowledge, interpersonal relationships, culture, health, safety, and … [Read more...]
