Interview with Raven Kaldera about Shamanism, BDSM Among the Disabled and Fifty Shades of Gray

Raven Kaldera from ravenkaldera.org

What does being a Shaman mean to you?It means that I am a spirit-worker – I work with the spirits of earth, fire, water, air, plants, animals, the Dead, and various Gods of my tradition. These are not archetypes or metaphors to me, they are People who are my allies, friends, and sometimes masters. Among spirit-workers in my tradition, a shaman is one who is chosen to devote their life to this work, and can’t ever go back.My Gods use me as a tool to make change in the world, and one of the … [Read more...]

A Crazy Late Night Lammas

Several years ago, my husband and I were part of a group from Missouri that was invited to a Lamas camp out. This event took place in Illinois and we didn't get there until the sun was just going down. We were left setting up our tents in the dark by feel and unsteady flashlight. After wrestling canvas and poles we followed a narrow trail through the woods toward the sound of drums and ritual voices. It led an air of mystery to the adventure. Here I was in unknown surroundings going to a … [Read more...]

Psychedelic Breakthrough

by Chris Johnson theartofchrisjohnson.com

This piece was planned while the artist was in a mental institution. They posted on Reddit saying, "I cannot use traditional paint mediums, I have very weak lungs because of a childhood accident where I was exposed to high levels of chlorine. I could not participate in sports, or any other childhood fun, but in my isolation I started to make artwork. I had to drop out of art school because in every painting class I would be sneezing out blood and red phlemb. This made me very depressed for some … [Read more...]

Margot Adler

Margot-adler-2004

In the mid 90s, while I was in college, I began to doubt my Christian background. I no longer believed in a jealous god, a being who demanded worship and would send non-believers to hell. But I didn’t know what religion to study. I spoke with my religion professor, Church of Christ minister Stephanie Curran, and told her about my views and how I saw God as something that flowed through all of nature. She gave me Drawing Down the Moon: Witches, Druids, Goddess Worshippers, and Other Pagans in A … [Read more...]

Body Issues

I struggle to love myself but I do.There are so many things about my body that could be considered flawed. For instance, I have morphia on my torso, thighs, and lower back. It’s scarring from an autoimmune reaction. I’m also pear shaped meaning my hips are wider then my waist and upper body. I’m only five feet tall and wear glasses. I have a mental illness and other physical illnesses.I understand that I am perfect the way I am. Then there is the “but” or “in theory” that creeps into my h … [Read more...]

The Need for a Deep Ecological Community

Editors’ Note: This article is part of the Public Square 2014 Summer Series: Conversations on Religious Trends. Read other perspectives from the Pagan community here.I suffer from PTSD (Post Traumatic Stress Disorder), which causes panic attacks, anxiety, and depression. Because of this I don’t write as often as I should. I get scared of the invisible crowd of angry critics. It isn’t that I don’t write well. It’s that I’m my own worst enemy when I let myself conjure up these people with n … [Read more...]
