This is part of a collaborative piece at the Staff of Asclepius. There is more to come on Saturday and Sunday.“The Moon is an accomplice in nocturnal secrets,” writes Maryam Sachs author of The Moon. She was born in Iran, raised in Europe, educated in America, and lives in London. So Maryam is at ease with many cultures. I haven’t experienced as many cultures as she has, but I am drawn to the different Gods and Goddesses among every culture and their religious lore. I am also drawn to the pow … [Read more...]

Note: this post was prompted by posts made by my friend Beth (On Fibromyalgia and Spiritual Emergency, over on PaganSquare) and Heather (Let's Talk About Social Services, also over on PaganSquare). For those of you just tuning in, I have PTSD, which in my case manifests with depression and anxiety.  I have been on an antidepressant as of March, and an anti-anxiety med as of May.This is not my first go-round with medication.  I was diagnosed in 2002 and began a round of "treatment" which di … [Read more...]

To Beat Depression, Honor Your Victories

At the moment when I felt like I made it, I realized there are four facits of my life that could be called magical, not just my path as a Pagan. First I guess I should clarify what I mean when I say I felt like I made it. My personal blog, the Crimson Crescent at www.feministelemental.wordpress.com was promoted by fellow SOA contributor Nornoriel, for which I am very thankful. This occured after I wrote my most recent … [Read more...]

The_needles_at_Cannon_beach

This is the second piece of the three-part collaborative series by Staff of Asclepius contributors. The element that I most have an affinity for, in terms of magical and energy work, is water.  I have only ever lived in coastal states.  I could not live too far inland or someplace like the Midwest because I would feel "landlocked".I am fortunate to live within a reasonable driving distance of the Oregon coast, where I have made a few trips with friends of mine, including a couple of p … [Read more...]

A Look at the anthology Rooted in the Body, Seeking the Soul: Magic Practitioners Living with Disabilities, Addiction, and Illness.

Rooted in the Body, Seeking the Soul: Magic Practitioners Living with Disabilities, Addiction, and Illness: An excerpt from "Tangible Magick" by Lady Cedar Nightsong. I'll be posting an interview with her on Wednesday, July 24.Handicraft magick is not always so complicated. Simple spells can be done with nothing more than a piece of thread or cord. Since I have trouble with tangling thread, and cannot always see how to get the knots out, I prefer thicker satin cord, which is easier to work … [Read more...]

Practical and Magical Wildfire Safety

I was listening to Modern Pagan Podcast's (Correction: Pagan Weekly News) June 10th episode where RevKess and Zaracon discussed the Colorado wildfires. (Thank you for mentioning the anthology and blog!) Even in cities sixty miles away from the major blaze, there is thick smoke tainting the air with its acrid smell. The haze dims streetlights and fills store entryways. If you are near the wildfire areas, it's important to pay attention to air quality reports especially if you are elderly, have a … [Read more...]

Making Myth, Music and Magic

I have a passion for books and music. E-books are very popular but I prefer print because books are a full body experience. I get a thrill from the smell of ink and paper. It's the only time knowledge and tales have a scent and when I walk into a library my spirit soars, carried away on perfumed promises of insights and flights of fancy. On Reddit, I'm subscribed to Libraryporn where people post pictures of amazing libraries. There are some breathtaking vaults of knowledge. The sounds of … [Read more...]
