Death and rebirth: by Nornoriel Lokason

This is part of a three-part series by the contributors to Staff of Asclepius, on the theme of death and rebirth, for Samhain.Over the nearly twenty years that I've been a practicing pagan, Samhain has consistently been my least favorite holiday, the one that I am the least enthusiastic about celebrating.  There are a number of reasons for this, among them beingI was Not Allowed to have fun on Halloween as a child, and when I saw other grownups doing whatever they wanted on Halloween … [Read more...]

A spoonie ritual for Samhain

For those of you who might be interested in a ritual script for Samhain that's on the minimalist side (which I designed based on my own needs), I have one up on my blog, Ride the Spiral - check it out. … [Read more...]

Over the weekend, I almost relapsed.I have, as I've mentioned before, a self-injury history.  The last time I self-injured was the end of February.  With regards to my recovery, I can only take it one day at a time.  And the thing with self-injury is, I know people who have been clean for years, who still get occasional urges. There is a difference between getting the urge to self-injure, and then coming yea close to it, just like there is a difference between suicidal ideation (ie fe … [Read more...]

Autumn Equinox: Light and Shadow (by Nornoriel Lokason)

The Willamette River at Molalla River State Park near Canby, Oregon by Ian Poellet.

This is Part 2 of a three-part series. In Vanaheim, the fall equinox is celebrated by its citizens (per corroborated gnosis) as the Festival of Gratitude (if you'd like to know more about the actual observance of said holiday, I have a piece here on my blog at PaganSquare). So this will be a gratitude post.2013 was the most difficult year of my life to date, and I say this as someone who has pretty much gotten a post-doctorate education at the School of Hard Knocks.  I have been t … [Read more...]

Life hacks

One of the diagnoses I have is ADHD; one of the two medications I'm on is used off-label for ADHD (as well as the anxiety of PTSD, which I have).  I have found that in the main, my ability to focus and get jobs done has been better, since starting this medication back in May.However, I have also noticed that since starting the medication, I've been having issues with my short-term memory, which never used to be that much of an issue before, but has caused me some problems, including awkward m … [Read more...]

A sense of wonder

800px-Vårblot_2010_offergåvor

One of the things that friends and loved ones find the most endearing about me as a person is I am in many ways like a big kid.  (I am paradoxically a grumpy old man and a big kid, in one person.)  It doesn't take much to make me happy. I get REALLY EXCITED AND ENTHUSIASTIC, IN CAPSLOCK, over what might seem like little things.  I often notice things that others don't, and have created some magical moments for others wherein I point out things like leaves or dandelion puff blowing in the breeze, … [Read more...]

The power of love

Two_of_them_-_Foto_Giovanni_Dall'Orto,_7-Apr-2002_3

I am best known as a Vanatruar, and my patron is the demon Asmodai - but the most important entity in my life is the one I refer to as D, a lore demon who I am not permitted to publicly identify.D is my de facto partner. My relationship with him is more pleasure than business, though I have dealt with him in a business context (he is in fact very, very helpful to me in that context).  But even just with strictly the intimate side of things, the last six months have been healing and … [Read more...]

“The dark side”

While I am best known as one of the forefathers of the Vanatru movement and one of the leading resources on the Vanir and Vanatru... the Vanir are not the sole entities in my life.  I am also a demonolater; my patron is Asmodai, the demon of wrath.  The entity most important to me is one I refer to as D (a lore demon who I'm not allowed to publicly identify). This has surprised people.  "You don't look like a Satanist!" 1. I'm not a Satanist.  2. What does a Satanist look like?  They don't all … [Read more...]

Spirit-work and self-care

Glühwendel_brennt_durch

I am a spirit-worker - my life is not my own, but lived in full-time service to the Powers... in my specific case, the Vanir.  (I have other intensive relationships with entities outside this pantheon, but I would not define them as service-oriented.)  I have been dismembered, killed, and reborn in my astral body, with corresponding energetic and psychological changes; I have had my life blown apart and re-assembled in the way the Powers think it ought to be, with nothing getting in the way of m … [Read more...]

Labyrinth

Serpentslabyrinth

One of the things that drew me to the story of Myrddin Emrys as told in The Crystal Cave by Mary Stewart was, well, the crystal cave. I had this thing for caves as long as I could remember. Could not explain why, I just did. At least some of the appeal of Fraggle Rock to me, as a kid, was that the Fraggles all lived in a cave together. I liked to “play cave” when I was a kid and make caves out of boxes, blankets, etc. I liked hanging out in hollowed-out tree caves and under fallen trees that mad … [Read more...]
