Come the Rapture Your Interwebs Is Down

I use Hootsuite everyday. As often as I eat food and use toilet paper. As often as I wash my hands and look out the window to check the weather. Today, it’s down, as well as Foursquare, Reddit and other services relying on Amazon’s cloud service. Twitter is full of folks adrift and a’ranting over the outage.

Between the jokes regarding Skynet becoming self aware last Tuesday and the rumor going around that the Rapture is happening today (although some doomsdayers are hedging their bets saying they obviously meant MAY 21st), the day has a Ragnarok-ish feel.

Hootsuite has become an ingrained habit. I am dependent on it. Without it I am forced to camp out on Twitter and Facebook. To hurry up and wait all day long. Since when did the convenience of social media become such a chore?

Maybe the Governator will yet come to save us all. Maybe Judgement Day will mean my roommates go to their reward leaving the house all to myself. Maybe…

Maybe I should be as dependent on meditation as I am on Hootsuite? Maybe time for music should be as much of a habit? Maybe taking time to reach out to others face to face should be as much of a daily priority?

For me…”Maybe I should be as dependent on meditation as I am on Hootsuite? Maybe time for music should be as much of a habit? Maybe taking time to reach out to others face to face should be as much of a daily priority?” … that is what I am working on now. And making very satisfying strides.

Ironically, I’m not a hootsuite user but after “seeing” all the trouble it’s causing others when it’s down, part of me wants to check it out when it’s back up and see if it simplifies my life in anyway. I guess maybe the adage “there’s no bad publicity…just publicity” might be true in this case.

The main benefit of the services is being able to schedule links and not just statuses.

    So say we all!
    Amen!
    Blessed be!

and on that note, I’m going to get off the internet and go walk.

I have to admit, I’m not on social media very much (except facebook). My main internet addictions are PNC, Patheos, and the Wild Hunt :)

I have an internet addiction to TvTropes.org. Witty analysis of fiction… cannot. look. away.

I’ve been trying to cut down on facebook. I’ve mad everything super private so that people can only send me private messages (no photos, no wall posts, no links, etc.)

But, when the internet is down on campus and I can’t get online, I get more angry than I should. Then I despair over the realization of how silly that anger is, and I should just read a book or do other homework.

I’m going to write a schedule of how I *actually* use my time over a week. I’m sure I’ll make some adjustments after reviewing it.

If Hootsuite saves you time online, then it is actually helping you make time to meditate or listen to music. Getting rid of the tools that help you do your job won’t make you more spiritual.

Yeah, Hootsuite is a bad habit of mine, too. Worse, I tweet for my job, so it’s really important to have it working. Oh, well. Have to be patient.

Tweetdeck is ok. I used it today to get stuff done.

However, for Facebook there’s nothing comparable to Hootsuite that I’ve found…

“Maybe taking time to reach out to others face to face should be as much of a daily priority?”

this is the problem I’ve had on Facebook…no one interested in an actual face-to-face meeting. Social media should help one stay in contact when you can not meet, NOT replace actual physical socializing!
