Freedom

I am contemplating Freedom today. From the concept in American culture, to the strange Freedom of living with 1,000 Pagans on a scrap of land in Illinois. What does Freedom mean for you as a Pagan?

I’ll be writing about this tomorrow, but I’d like to know what you think.

True freedom to me is not giving a damn. If you don’t give a damn, then nobody can do anything to you. They can’t hurt you, they can only make you miserable for a short while. There is no punishment for your actions because you can’t punish a person who doesn’t give a damn.

If they are hurting you or punishing you and you haven’t committed a violent crime or theft, then that’s not really a free society and apathy is more of a defense mechanism for dealing with lack of freedom.

Being free I guess doesn’t have to mean your happy or safe or anything else of the sort.  It just means you can feel and believe and share ideas at your own discretion and others won’t hunt you down and hurt you for sharing those ideas.  It means people don’t come after you because you are visually different than the majority appearance.  It means that physical movement isn’t restricted or limited for any reason beyond actual safety concerns.  It allows all people equal rights to land, work, and quality of life regardless of who they are or what they think.  It’s not something we’ve achieved quite yet but I think it’s something worth moving towards.

Freedom to me means…. to be free to speak my mind without the fear of being hurt or taken to jail. To chose where I want to live  and the way I want to live as long as it is not hurting others. It is ok to be physically different with out being riducled just accepted for the person that I am. I have choices in jobs and education in which I do with no limitations other than the ones I impose on myself. The choice to marry and raise children and to raise them the way I see fit as long as I am not abuse of to them. (ie… there is a difference between spanking and hitting or verbal abuse and disiplining firmly).

I do love PSG:  Fredom from my mundane responsibilities, freedom to express my ideas freely with no fear of persecution, ridicule, judegement or criticism, freedom to be among others who condone diversity, freedom to make loud music with my drums at 3am without getting into trouble or bothering the neighbors, freedom to dance like wild men and women around huge bonfires in trance on rivers of red sparks and starlight, freedom to laugh like there is no tomorow.  Because when you really think about it, there isn’t.
