Wyrd Designs – King Radbod and the Importance of the Ancestors

This week on August 9th many Heathens who are members of the Asatru Alliance, or who opt to use their calendar, set aside time to celebrate the life and memory of the Frisian King Radbod (680-719 CE), who is a hero to many living Heathens and Pagans today. Christian missionaries came close to baptizing King [Read More…]

Wyrd Designs – Heathens Support Fallen Soldier At Anti-Westboro Baptist Protest

The news of Westboro Baptist’s planned protest of Sgt. Balduf’s funeral soon lit up the internet and social media sites, and supporters and volunteers sprung into action. According to a local news report about two thousand people showed up to support Sgt Balduf’s family, and to act as a visible and audible screen against the Westboro Baptist members. But what you won’t find in any other news report of that day, is the fact that among the vast crowd of anti-protesters, were two Asatru associated with the local White Oak Kindred.

Wyrd Designs – Cleanliness and Garb at Rituals

Heathens are a varied bunch, with varying opinions and interpretations on a number of issues, like with any religion. Among the items debated sometimes (and seemingly ad nauseum at times) is whether one should wear period garb or not. [Read more…]

Wyrd Designs – Wedding Customs in the Northern Tradition

While part of the world may now be in Royal Wedding-mania, all I can say is, I grow a bit weary of all of the news and media coverage, especially of the fluff stories of the really tacky merchandise, or finding Kate’s face on a jelly-bean. Dear world media, really? Is that the best thing [Read More…]

Wyrd Designs – The Holy Tides – Ostara, Sigrblot & Summer Nights

For those of us in the Northern Tradition, the high holy tide of Ostara is upon us. Some are gearing up to celebrate this weekend, and others may postpone their celebrations so that they coincide more with the observed Christian date of Easter instead. The later allows heathen children to be able to participate in [Read More…]

Happy St. Patrick’s Day? I Don’t Think So.

I was driving around my little town today and I saw that several houses already have decorations up for St. Patrick’s Day, which in the US is about two weeks away. I usually forget all about this “holiday,” and I certainly don’t celebrate it, but this time, seeing the shamrocks and the green paper garlands [Read More…]

PantheaCon: Concerning Three Rituals

There were quite a few rituals at PantheaCon and unfortunately I couldn’t make them all. I was determined that the rituals I did attend wouldn’t be Wiccan so I could experience the rites of other Pagan religions. Here are my thoughts on the three rituals I was able to participate in over this hectic weekend. [Read More…]

Wyrd Designs – Weyland The Smith

Weyland (also known as Volund) is a legendary blacksmith, which we have references to from both Norse (Þiðrekssaga & the Poetic Edda’s Völundarkviða) and Anglo-Saxon (Beowulf, Deor and Waldere) sources. In the archaeological record we see his story depicted on the Swedish Ardre image stone VIII, the Franks Casket, and a variety of stone cross [Read More…]
