Wyrd Designs – Heathens Support Fallen Soldier At Anti-Westboro Baptist Protest

On June 13, funeral services were held in Nashville, Tennessee for U.S. Marine Sgt. Kevin Balduf who was killed in action on May 12 while serving in Afghanistan. The friends and family of Sgt. Balduf were faced not only with the task of mourning someone they cared for, but with the unwelcome attention of the controversial Westboro Baptist Church, who announced their plans to protest at his funeral services.Westboro Baptist is a church headed by Fred Phelps, which is primarily comprised of a … [Read more...]

When Good Pagans Do Nothing

"All that is necessary for evil to triumph is for good men to do nothing." - Leo Tolstoy My Southern Baptist upbringing taught me that I was in the world but not of it. I was not to be concerned with worldly things, or to seek to engage with the world on it's terms. I was to let that pass by and concern myself with the kingdom of God. My parents and some of my teachers at church had that old-school pre-politicized Evangelical worldview. There was a feeling that this world is run by Satan and … [Read more...]

Tragedy in AZ: Candles and Oranges Do Not An Occultist Make

I thought the worst news I would hear this morning would be that the power is out. Since Georgia is bogged down in Snowpocalypse 2011 I was prepared for that inconvenience. Power is humming away and phones/internet is on. I switched on my laptop and read the news. My mistake. It's bad enough ordinary citizens are taking their speculation to the extremes but the NY Daily News has decided to jump to conclusions ahead of it's readers. Now there's a lot of speculation on Jared Lee Loughner's … [Read more...]

Religion and Politics

What is it about religion and politics? Why do we feel compelled to marry the two? I see other faith traditions become mired in it and occasionally see other Pagans dig hip deep into it, not merely as people but as Pagans. I confess I have a hard time understanding this. For me, if it wasn't for politicians cropping up who feel a need to attack my faith, I don't think I'd ever mix the two. Certainly my faith informs my values and my values inform my political opinion but that goes for every … [Read more...]

The Silly Season: Witches, Politics or Both?

I confess I hate Politics. I enjoy discussing politics with polite reasonable people, but I loathe Politics. As an American Pagan you can't escape "Big P Politics" even if you want to. Not only do other religions insist on getting tangled up in the political process, every so often a candidate decides to attack us.Maybe it really doesn't help that we hold our elections in early Nov, just after the lead up to Halloween. The Christine O'Donnell thing truly was silly. Stuff 'n' nonsense. Zan over … [Read more...]

Pagan Soup: Gleeks, Rock Gods, O’Donnell and Your Thoughts on Evil

Glee on SpiritualityGlee has touched on spirituality before. Both Rachel and Puck are Jewish and Quinn's parents are very conservative Christians. Last night Glee decided to feature songs about spirituality and while I groaned at first the episode actually turned out nicely, if a bit preachy. The issue of non-believers right to not have religion forced on them, particularly in a school environment was a nice touch. While the episode felt heavy for Glee, and Glee has tackled heavy subjects in … [Read more...]

O’Donnell, the Media, Real Witches and the Promise of October

The Pagan community never expected this kind of media attention over Christine O'Donnell's ignorant and silly comments. We certainly didn't receive this much attention when Jerry Falwell said that we, along with the ACLU and others, caused 9/11. As a community we are used to people saying something negative and ridiculous about us in the public forum while we try in vain to be heard above the media hoopla. Yet O'Donnell's comments have the media coming to us, and this is something new.Jason … [Read more...]

Christine O’Donnell Dabbled In Witchcraft and Reagan Used Psychics

In the past, I've dabbled in Christianity. I was seeing this Pentecostal man and I just sort of got sucked into it briefly. I mean, I didn't handle snakes or speak in tongues. But yeah, I dabbled. It involved a guy. Big deal. This anecdote from my life isn't all that interesting. It certainly wouldn't prevent me from running for office or be held against me when seeking employment. It's a non-issue. So why is Christine O'Donnell dabbling in Witchcraft any different? In fact why is any … [Read more...]

Banning the Burka: a Heathen Reponse

This past Wednesday, the Wall Street Journal announced that France had followed through with its plans to ban the wearing of the burka: full body robes and head covering worn by some Muslim women. Wearing the burka, or indeed just the traditional headscarf has been a site of tremendous conflict, not just in France but throughout Europe over the past few years. This is so, perhaps most especially when devout women choose of their own free will to express their commitment to their faith in such a … [Read more...]

When You Threaten A Journalist…

Recently Pagan Newswire Collective journalist and Pantheon blogger Cara Shulz has been receiving threats via e-mail and has made it clear that she will be reporting these to the appropriate authorities. Paganism is a loose grouping of communities whose one clear unifying value is tolerance, not merely for religious views and practices but for political ideologies. Threatening a Pagan journalist you disagree with is ridiculous.1. Freedom Of SpeechThe fact that there are Pagan journalists is … [Read more...]
