So this is Christmas…

Such a quiet day. There is a hushed stillness over the land. I imagine in homes all across the country children have woken to find Santa has arrived. There is excitement and giddy and the fumbling of parents for coffee and tea.In a way, I suppose today marks the end of my solitary experiment. Did I enjoy it? I did. It was nice to have a season free of stress and obligations to traditions I don't much care for. Would I do it again? I don't think so.While I needed this season of hush, I … [Read more...]

Why Emphasize Yule?

In the Wheel of the Year, Yule isn't very important. It's one of the minor holidays. It's a bottom-rung holiday, less important than the four major fire festivals, and less important than the two most important of those: Beltane and Samhain.Yet Yule is given a lot of attention. We decorate, we buy presents, we sing holiday songs and give Yule far more attention that it's equally important counterparts Ostara, Midsummer and Mabon. We treat Yule as if, well, as if it's Christmas.I … [Read more...]

“You can raise money to help your sick cat, for example, but not poor people.”

Congratulations to PayPal for winning Top Scrooge 2012.Regretsy, possibly one of the most deliciously twisted web sites around (which means I LOVE them), decided to help out poor folks this holiday season. Because our economy sucks and there are lots of poor folks who are hurting right now. However, PayPal arbitrarily decided to not merely shut down their charitable actions, but freeze ALL of their accounts for 6 months and is insisting all the donations be refunded. Of course, PayPal is … [Read more...]

Over Christmas Already…

Before Halloween, the decorations were already in the stores. I thought it was early, but I bought a rosemary Yule tree and a nice secular Happy Holidays sign in the shape of a five-pointed star. Yet here we are at the end of November and we've already had over a month of Christmas consumerism. I'm done. I'm over it. Already.I don't celebrate this holiday and I'm tired of being bombarded with it. I'm not buying anyone anything. I'm not singing carols. I'm not observing Advent. I'm not … [Read more...]

A Very Merry Mithras: Holiday Controversy

As we are all sleeping in and filling our fists with mugs of java a little holiday controversy to browse as our grey matter rearranges itself is in order.Jason Pitzl-Waters (author of The Wild Hunt) made the case that secular Christmas celebration are just people doin' what comes natural: So all those non-Christians celebrating "Christmas" are simply doing what comes naturally, and the insistence by some Christian pundits and activists that December and its merriment somehow belongs only to … [Read more...]

Wyrd Designs – Deck the Halls and Hearth!

The Yuletide is just around the corner... and for those of us in the Northern Tradition, this is one of our most sacred holy tides of the year. Now that Thanksgiving is behind us, many of us are gearing up to Deck the Halls and Hearth. As a child, I recall helping my mother make all sorts of 100% natural decorations. One of the staples were applesauce & cinnamon ornaments. They are deceptively easy to make, and can be used for anything from decorating the tree, used in a wreath or garland, … [Read more...]
