Paganism: What We Can Learn From Star Trek

We all know the jokes. Heathens are Klingons, Recons are Vulcans, and oh, there are a lot of choices for the Borg nowadays. Back when I first heard the joke, Llewellyn was the Borg, but Witch School might make as amusing a candidate nowadays.Jokes aside, I think there are a lot of similarities between Modern Paganism and the Star Trek canon. The United Federation of Planets, and it's exploration/peacekeeping/diplomatic arm Starfleet, aims to promote peace, justice, liberty, cooperation, and by … [Read more...]

Steve Simon is My Hero

I had every intention of waxing eloquent on the AFA dedication of a Pagan chapel, but Rep. Simon has won my heart away. His entire speech was a "shame on you" to those who feel they must impose their religious values on the rest of us, and are not above compromising our legislative practices to do so. Those people will always be a threat to the virtuous and moral, and we will always need people like Steve Simon to call them on their duplicity. The type of  people who oppose same-sex marriage … [Read more...]

Guest Post: Scott Reimers’ Separate but Equal is a Lie

There was recently a large conversation regarding people being turned away from rituals at Pantheacon due to gender.  As a man who was ineligible for 3 different women only rituals, my only complaint was the lack of clarity regarding requisites for attendance.I intuited that the specific ritual Thorn mentioned in Duality and Diversity: Gender at Pantheacon was women only.   You rarely see AMAZONS hold a Skyclad, "ecstatic, undulating, life-affirming ritual in honor of Lilith"... and as … [Read more...]

We are Born in Original Blessing

It was ex-Dominican and current American Episcopal priest Matthew Fox who coined the term "Original Blessing" for the idea that we are are not born in sin but in blessing. He is of the opinion that there are two Christianities in the world, and he has chosen the kinder, more inclusive one. There is this strange idea that the world is bad, the material is wrong and that denying that is being escapist. If we are not lost souls seeking redemption we have no purpose, no meaning. How foolish are we … [Read more...]

God In America: Vignettes Of Christian Evolution

PBS has a new series called "God In America" that features Stephen Prothero, author of our current Patheos Book Club selection "God Is Not One." I didn't really know what to expect and what I found was interesting and uninspiring.I'm a religion geek and I find all things religious rather fascinating, yet I'm also a Pagan who finds the expressions of Christianity somewhat tedious. Watching each well-told story of the evolution of Christianity in the United States is interesting. If I were … [Read more...]

In Praise of Normal

Paganism is the the most accepting group of religions today. If you are GLBT, polyamorous, vegan, goth, or what-have-you, we welcome you with open arms. We will set a place for you at our tables and accommodate you as best we can. We are the spiritual embodiment of Emma Lazarus' poem: "Give me your tired, your poor,Your huddled masses yearning to breathe free,The wretched refuse of your teeming shore.Send these, the homeless, tempest-tost to me,I lift my … [Read more...]
