What We Mean By Rape Culture

I debated over this post. My colleagues genuinely believe it's wrong to give things like this attention, and maybe they are right. I prefer to expose these things to the light of day. Maybe I'm wrong. I should go ahead an warn that some folks may find triggers in this post, and it does contain NSFW content.I think the PNC did a fine job of covering PSG and Melissa Murry's story. You can read the coverage here and here and here and here and here. I recommend you read through all of it. Having … [Read more...]

The Limited Acceptability of the Female Geek

Robin Thorsen, who plays Clara on The Guild, would likely have to buy "geek shirts" in men's sizes, because geek women are expected to look a certain way, ane then we wonder how we've created a culture full of superficial posers.

Yesterday geek icon Felicia Day shared an article by Tara Tiger Brown on Forbes. She wanted feedback on the article and I felt compelled to comment. Not a "me too!" but an actual thoughtful comment. The point I was trying to make is that style is replacing substance in geekdom, and nowhere is that more obvious than in the expectations of geek girls. Women in particular are interested in finding ways to take the best of ancient practice and marry it to a modern … [Read more...]

Pagans Supporting JapanIt's a good time to be Pagan. I'm very proud of our community. Peter Dybing's fundraising efforts for Doctors Without Borders have raised over $23,000 and this week is the home stretch to reach the $30,000 goal. I wouldn't have thought it possible that we could have raised so much so quickly. It's a beacon shining forth of what Pagans, Wiccans, Heathens, Recons and all the other fabulous folks who make up our communities can accomplish together. Please contribute what … [Read more...]

Jezebel VS The Daily Show: Pagan Perspective

This morning a story about a war of words between Jezebel and The Daily Show caught my eye in between Warren Buffett acting cute and Lindsay Lohan going to jail. It seemed to suggest The Daily Show was sexist, and as a fan I wanted to get to the bottom of it. So I read all the sides and as a feminist I'm really peeved at Jezebel. Here's the scoop: Jezebel ran a story interviewing women who lost their jobs at The Daily Show and who couldn't get hired at The Daily Show about how the show is run … [Read more...]
