The Importance of Online Community

Online community gets dissed a lot. I know, because sometimes I'm the one doing the dissing. It is true that online community is limited in what it can do. It cannot give you a physical hug, let you take a bit of it's fettuccine alfredo, or bring a casserole to your house and sit with you as a palpable human presence as you grieve over a loved one. Best Fundraising Idea EVER

I follow some atheist blogs so I knew a big fundraising campaign was gearing up for the Secular Student Alliance. People ask me to attend a lot of events. I have to decline a lot. I just don't have the funds to travel. This year I missed out on PantheaCon, but, far more heartbreakingly, I won't be able to attend Pagan Spirit Gathering. First Japan, Now The Daily Show

Over $32,000 was raised by the Pagan community for Doctors Without Borders relief efforts in Japan and donations are still trickling in. That's amazing.
