Samhain and S.A.D.

Why do we love a season that makes us feel like crud? Even The Bloggess has been going through a funk and she's made of awesome and rainbow ninjas sprinkled with sarcasm. I'm always tempted to hibernate through this time of year, and wake up at Yule. So although I have a lot to write about, I have been sternly warned I'm not allowed to go crazy. Instead of rushing about trying to pull together a post, take care of every e-mail, dot every i and cross every T, I'm going to spend some time today … [Read more...]

The Scariest Job On Earth

Ok, maybe not the scariest, but it's on up there in the toll it takes on the well-being of the worker: Pagan blogger. Oh, of all the nightmares and spectres we will tantalize ourselves with over the Halloween weekend, I'd like to float a few ghouls past you to send a chill down your spine. So grab some popcorn, dim the lights and snuggle up in your blankie as I reveal the scariest things about being a Pagan blogger. Why Being A Pagan Blogger Is Scary Obviously, as a Pagan blogger, you are a … [Read more...]

Regarding the War on Halloween

I've been joking about writing a piece on "the War on Halloween" for a few weeks now, because from a Pagan perspective it's such an absurd topic. Yet the more I joked the more it seemed a good idea. You see, the truth is, Halloween is a secular holiday. It doesn't belong to any religion. What we know as Halloween today began as an excuse for bored Edwardians to party and scare the crap out of each other. It kept going because it was fun, and after two World Wars the West needed an excuse for … [Read more...]

13 Songs for Hallows

Like many of you, I'm extremely busy in October. Just as nature is drawing me into a time for quiet repose, I find I have more to do and accomplish than ever. As I am gearing up for projects to be tackled, my spirit is longing for long hours in meditation and quiet solitude. So although I was saving it for this weekend, here is my song list for Hallows. 13. Dante's Prayer - Loreena McKennitt When the dark night seems endless, please remember me. 12. Twa Corbiez - Omnia Where shall we gang … [Read more...]

Book Review: Christian Day’s The Witches’ Book of the Dead

I don't generally bother to review books I don't think I'll care for, especially with a stack of books I actually want to read waiting on me. Not being Christian Day's biggest fan, I was reluctant to read The Witches' Book of the Dead but I was intrigued by some of the reviews as much as I was repelled by others. So I read it, and here's my opinion of it. Make of it what you will. The Good Overall, the book is good. Day has compiled an impressive amount of lore regarding necromancy and … [Read more...]

Longing for Hallows

I considered trying some humor today. Writing about the "War on Halloween" or something like that. Yet, all around me leaves are blazing and drifting slowly to the ground. The afternoon light makes the mountains glow like molten gold. I'm in love with this season. It's strange how seductive the season can be. The oranges and golds, the chill in the air, the scent of woodsmoke and the waning light all mean one thing: we are being drawn into darkness. We find this comforting, like retreating into … [Read more...]

Samhain Treat

I'm still laid low by the flu and this $^*%#%@ fever will not break so I can get some relief. However, Celestial Elf has a new machina film up for Samhain. I find these strangely charming. I hope you do too. Oh, and have an awesome Rapture! By reducing the workforce and creating an abundance of food for the winter, the Rapture may be as big an economic and scientific boon as the Black Death turned out to be. … [Read more...]

The Devil Is A Useful Creature

Some days I envy the Christians their Devil. He's such a useful creature. All the evil deeds mankind does can be left on his doorstep. Everything we don't like can be blamed upon him. He's a one-size-fits-all scapegoat and I kinda wish I had one. If I had a Devil I'd blame him for my hair not cooperating and looking sad and limp. I could spend more time on my hair, but it sure would be easier to blame a Devil for the frizzies. And when someone cuts me off in traffic, instead of reminding … [Read more...]

13 Songs for Halloween (again)

Last year I did a playlist for Halloween, and I thought I'd do another playlist this year before Hallows is upon us. 13. The Skeleton Dance - Silly Symphonies The only video I'm bringing back from last year's list. 12. The Highwayman - Loreena McKennitt 11. Ghost Riders In The Sky - Johnny Cash 10. Long Black Veil - Harry Manx 9. Wise Woman - Monika McGee and Lenansidhe 8. St. James Infirmary - Hugh Laurie 7. Breakfast in Hell - Slaid Cleeves 6. Don't Monkey Round My … [Read more...]

M. Macha NightMare: Bone Blossom Channels Spiderwoman | Season of the Witch

Guest post by┬áM. Macha NightMare for our Season of the Witch series, recounting the stories of Witches. My late friend Bone Blossom had a huge loom in her living room upon which she wove all manner of wonderful cloth. For the direct action at Lawrence Livermore Labs, at which there was a large contingent of Reclaiming Witches and other Earth-loving Pagans -- I recall this as being at Brigit of 1982 -- she created an open weaving for demonstrators to interweave flowers and feathers, photographs … [Read more...]
