Wyrd Designs – Possible Pagan Roots for the Name of England

The modern day country of England, appears to derive its name indirectly from the Vanic deity, Freyr who was widely worshiped among the Scandinavian, Germanic and Anglo-Saxon peoples. … [Read more...]

Thor: A Pagan Review of the Film

Thor is epic. It's not true to the lore but it's a good film. There are no spoilers in this review (from my POV).Disappointments? Sure.Rene Russo was less than epic as Frigga. She wasn't bad, but she didn't strike me as regal and commanding enough for the role. Looking the part simply isn't enough.I felt there was too much effort spent trying to bridge (pardon the pun) science and magic. You don't have to rubber ducky* everything. Sometimes mystery is good.Sif's hair still bugs me. I … [Read more...]

Heimdall & The Horned God: Beyond Black & White

The debate regarding Idris Elba playing Heimdall, "the whitest of Gods", has me recollecting my first encounter with the Horned God of Wicca: He was not black as in African. Black was not so much a description of looks as it was of who he was. He was utter blackness: the extreme darkness of moonless nights, of empty space, of deep caverns, and dreamless sleep. While he had dark hair and eyes and black clothes, black was what he was and not how he appeared. I still feel what I wrote a year … [Read more...]

Wyrd Designs – Wedding Customs in the Northern Tradition

While part of the world may now be in Royal Wedding-mania, all I can say is, I grow a bit weary of all of the news and media coverage, especially of the fluff stories of the really tacky merchandise, or finding Kate’s face on a jelly-bean. Dear world media, really? Is that the best thing you can come up with by the dateline?I wish Wills & Katie the best, and I hope that all the problems that so plagued some of the last royal couples don’t plague this new generation. But I am very glad the d … [Read more...]

Wyrd Designs – May Day Punch Recipe

I am now a 1-year veteran blogger here at Patheos, and since I already covered the holy tide of Walpurgis last year (for new readers, you can find it here to read:  Wyrd Designs - Holy Tides -  May Day & Walpurgis), I thought this year I'd add to what I started. The previous article had my own punch recipe that I call Summerday Delight in it, but this year for people looking for traditional German flare to add to your celebration, you might want to check out these recipes for W … [Read more...]

Guest Post: Raising Up Strong Heathen Children

I do think it is a parent's responsibility to teach their child about their religion. I think the idea that a parent will not share their religion with their child and will instead “let them figure it out on their own” is somewhat harmful. Children need to be taught spiritual beliefs in the same way they are taught how to behave in public. If you do not teach your children about spirituality, the Gods, their Ancestors, and the way to live their lives in relation to the divine – then so … [Read more...]

Why Thor Matters

4 AM. For the second night in a row Thor wakes me up. The night before it was thunder. This time I just can't sleep. I keep thinking about the Thor film of all things. I toss. I turn. I get up, shower, dress and go to Wal*Mart. In the rain. Because this film disturbs me.You see, I never got into the Thor comics or The Avengers. My Marvel heroes were the X-Men. So when I look at the official website and trailers I don't see cheesy aliens from outer space, I see the Gods. When they say Asgard is … [Read more...]

Wyrd Designs – Is Heathenry Misogynistic? An Exploration into the Havamal

Through my years as a practicing Heathen in the Northern Tradition, there are certain subjects that invariably crop up when I'm interacting with the more general pagan crowd. One of these subjects is the perceived misogyny of the Northern Tradition.Yet, not only does our tradition have great respect and honor for the Goddesses, and a special cultus to the disir/matrons, but the human women also held a great deal of power as well. … [Read more...]

Wyrd Designs – The Holy Tides – Ostara, Sigrblot & Summer Nights

For those of us in the Northern Tradition, the high holy tide of Ostara is upon us. Some are gearing up to celebrate this weekend, and others may postpone their celebrations so that they coincide more with the observed Christian date of Easter instead. The later allows heathen children to be able to participate in more mainstream activities such as egg hunts with their peers at school and at community parks. … [Read more...]

Wyrd Designs – An Ostara Prayer

The time of Ostara will soon be upon us, and fellow Pantheon writer Galina Krasskova's latest article, and a recent shopping expedition at both World Market and Etsy... and well I suppose its understandable that I now have Ostara firmly on my brain. I've purchased this year's pysanky eggs used to decorate my altar, and then at the conclusion of my Ostara observances, I'll burn the eggs in offering. I'm hoping my kindred gets together to make some as well, but mine never come out nearly as good … [Read more...]
