This week I'm going to be talking to a lot of Pagan Newswire Collective folks about their week at Pagan Spirit Gathering. Pagan Hangout happens every Wednesday. Here's the time guide: 11 AM EDT (New York) 10 AM CDT (Nashville) 9 AM MDT (Denver) 8 AM PDT (Seattle) 4 PM BST (London) … [Read more...]
Super Secret Project Revealed and Last Fundraiser Post
There are a lot of reasons to take a project on. Sometimes it's because you are the most qualified person to take it on. Sometimes it's because you have the equipment to do it right. Sometimes it's just because you can see how important the project is, no one else will take the project on, and you just have to trust that the project will evolve into what you envision it can be. This project falls under the latter category. So my new project is Egregore News. It is my plan for it to turn into … [Read more...]
The Future of Pagan Media
We're less than a month away from a new calendar year. I've been thinking a lot lately about my vision for the Pagan portal here at Patheos: how it was, how it changed, and what it needs to be. In a way, 2011 has been a grand experiment, not just here, but all across Pagan media. Our media landscape is changing. There are new expectations, new projects and new understanding of what the needs of both our media and our community are. The internet has always been a catalyst for change in our … [Read more...]
Catholics and Pagans: When You Shouldn’t Talk To The Media
Having been to Jason Pitzl-Water's talks I'm quite aware that there are times when you shouldn't speak to the media. If you don't have a genuine need, why risk having your words twisted? Even so, I agreed to do an interview that I feel may have been a mistake. I have a great deal of respect and love for Elizabeth Scalia, managing editor of our Catholic portal and famously known as The Anchoress. When she asked me to be on a cable show she is a frequent guest host on, I said "Of course!" Maybe … [Read more...]
When Good Pagans Do Nothing
"All that is necessary for evil to triumph is for good men to do nothing." - Leo Tolstoy My Southern Baptist upbringing taught me that I was in the world but not of it. I was not to be concerned with worldly things, or to seek to engage with the world on it's terms. I was to let that pass by and concern myself with the kingdom of God. My parents and some of my teachers at church had that old-school pre-politicized Evangelical worldview. There was a feeling that this world is run by Satan and … [Read more...]
O’Donnell, the Media, Real Witches and the Promise of October
The Pagan community never expected this kind of media attention over Christine O'Donnell's ignorant and silly comments. We certainly didn't receive this much attention when Jerry Falwell said that we, along with the ACLU and others, caused 9/11. As a community we are used to people saying something negative and ridiculous about us in the public forum while we try in vain to be heard above the media hoopla. Yet O'Donnell's comments have the media coming to us, and this is something new. Jason … [Read more...]
