Wyrd Designs – Finding Religious Art

Let's face it, having religious iconography, statuary, jewelry and artwork is something most of us crave. But sometimes finding those items can be nigh impossible. For those seeking the Gods found in the Northern Tradition, it can be very hit and miss. Certain deities (Odin, Thor, Freya & Freyr) do have depictions that have been found in the archaeological record, but other major deities like Frigga we don't have a single image of at all (well at least that I know of).Of course, even when … [Read more...]

Terms of Service- A Little Polemic About Being a Godslave

I am a godatheow -  a godslave. Many of the spiritworkers and shamans that I know are also godslaves, in other words, outright owned by their Deities. It rather goes with the territory and I have found it to be one of the dominant paradigms of service in contemporary Heathenry and Paganism (though not the only paradigm. I suspect there are as many types of service as there are people serving). Lately, I’ve been asked over and over exactly what I mean when I say I am god-owned. To me and others in … [Read more...]

Wyrd Designs: Nine Long Nights – a song

As a child, I recall playing on my swingset and created my own songs and lyrics on the fly. As a teen when I was attending church (when I'd rather be sleeping), the one part of the service I didn't mind was the songs. I enjoyed singing, even if my own singing skills are less fantabulous than the Glee cast. When I converted into paganism, and later especially the Northern Tradition, I found myself missing the songs the most. Perhaps that why, I have a tendency to start singing my lore at times. F … [Read more...]

Wyrd Designs – Ritual Symbolism in the Northern Tradition

Most of those who come to our religion, come first from some form of Christianity. Let's put ourselves in a hypothetical situation for a moment. Let's say you know nothing about Christianity, and you find yourself at a Catholic service. At the conclusion of the service, Communion is given to those appropriate believers in the church. As an outsider you can watch this process, and somehow understand that the bread/wafer they're eating, and the beverage they're drinking has some sort of ritual … [Read more...]

Being Yourself – Not Always The Easy Path.

I have a story to tell.It is not an easy story.  I don't like this story, and I don't want to tell it; I tend to avoid it, skip over it, make light of the details.  But I feel it is the right thing to do, for the Pagan community at large, and the Heathen community in specific. But first, some of my background.  (I promise, this is information relating to my story.)I first became a Heathen in college; I had a Heathen friend, B., who invited me to all the Heathen gatherings.  Since I was(and a … [Read more...]

Wyrd Designs – Understanding the Symbols Part 3 – Irminsul

The Irminsul is a symbol found in antiquity, but unlike the mjollnir (Thor’s Hammer), this is not a symbol that we have any evidence of it ever being worn. Instead it appears to be a communal symbol, erected in honor of the Gods. The Irminsul, in the Old Saxon language means mighty pillar, and it may connect to a possible god of the Saxon tribe by the name of Irmin as well. The existence of Irmin is at best a supposition and is by no means absolute. Some scholars who do accept the possibility of … [Read more...]

Wyrd Designs: Understanding the Symbols Part 1 – The Valknut

Every religion and culture has an iconography which is uniquely it’s own, and the Northern Tradition is no different. Common symbols found in conjunction with this religion are the Valknut, the Mjollnir, the irminsmul, various runes, the unfortunately misappropriated swastiska, etc. But what do they mean? The Valknut, is one of the most traditional symbols associated with the Norse God Odin. Since ancient times this symbol has been used throughout Europe in association with the God known as t … [Read more...]

Wyrd Designs: Just Because You’re Asatru, Doesn’t Mean You’re Going to Valhalla

One of the commonly misperpetuated beliefs of the Asatru afterlife is that the end goal is for us all to go to Valhalla. For these individuals that put such importance on the warrior aspects of our religion they overlook a couple of things. Foremost is that Freyja had first choice of the battle-slain, so if you qualified you may end up going to her hall, and NOT Valhalla. Secondly, while warrior aspects and cultuses were present in antiquity, ultimately the ancient cultures were agriculturally … [Read more...]
